Dear Friend, Over the past few years, October has been heralded as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This year, we have focused nationally on cyber-ethics, digital citizenship and prevention. Unfortunately we continue to witness tragic cases of bullying and cyberbullying, and the sexual exploitation of our children by online predators and invasive pornography. These stories, which highlight a lack of civility, innocence lost and privacy invaded, remind us that we all have a role to play. Our educational institutions, government, law enforcement, and the Internet industry all must play an active part in reducing risk and increasing safety in our virtual world. While we continue to work with our industry partners, law enforcement, Congress, and the media, parents and other adults remain the first line of defense. Moms and dads, educators, mentors and coaches must set a positive example for the kids under their care. Our children need and want advice, constructive rules, boundaries, and our involvement as they interact in the classroom, on the sports field, and through the Internet. When parents and other adults are not involved, kids are at risk of being bullied (or becoming bullies), to being targeted by strangers online, or of coming across inappropriate, violent or harcore sexual content. I urge you to recognize that your child is not immune from Internet dangers. One of the best investments you can make is to be an effective cyberparent in your child's life. Become educated, equipped and empowered through our Internet Safety 101 program. Your kids need your proative involvement to protect them from threats like cyberbullying, pornography, Internet predators, and dangers relating to online gaming, social networking and mobile devices. We are standing with you! Plese, let us know how we can support you.
For the sake of the children,
Donna Rice Hughes President, Enough Is Enough
