"It takes a lot of time to be a genius.

You have to sit around a lot, doing nothing...really nothing."

- Gertrude Stein

I laughed the first time I read this quote. "Sign me up!" But the more I've thought about it (and I've been mulling this one over for years now) the more I see the genius in her words.

If we're always doing, making, thinking, planning, fretting, creating, complaining, reading, eating, running, going and going and going like the Energizer Bunny, we start to believe that when we're not doing something - we're screwing up, or not doing enough, or missing out on something, or people will think we're lazy or crazy or both!

(please pause and
insert three deep breaths here)

What I'm realizing the older and wiser I get (I knew it would happen sooner or later!) is taking time to do nothing is one of the healthiest, most productive things I can do for myself.

This has been on my mind a lot lately, hence the two part Creative Oasis Permission to Pause Manifesto. The more I open my mind to this concept, the more serendipity supports it, and the more peaceful I feel on a semi-regular basis - which is at least small step in the right direction. (and I'm all about the small steps!)

Sometimes all we need is permission - so can you give yourself to take the next two minutes to pause? Shut your eyes (or don't), breathe deeply and just be. How did that feel?

Until next time,
all the best from my creative oasis (where pausing and napping are highly recommended)
to yours,
Jill
