The Case of Little Sarah: Stimulating the Brain with Chiropractic Care

By Edgar Romero, DC, DACNB

Little Sarah, 5 years old and with the biggest blue eyes you have ever seen, presented to the office with a history of seizures that had started at the age of 3. According to her parents, Sarah, without any other previous predisposing signs or symptoms, had her first seizure while falling asleep one otherwise normal day.

Since that event, she had suffered, on average, five such episodes per week, and at one point as many as five per day. These seizures always began just as she was about to fall asleep, and took the form of muscle contractions that began on the left side of her body and sometimes affected the right side of her body as well.

At the time of her evaluation, she was on two medications that her parents felt were helping somewhat, although the seizures continued. She had been through a plethora of tests, as you can imagine; I was touched by her nonchalance at meeting another "scary" doctor when she was first introduced to me. She had been through so many tests at that point that she had essentially been desensitized to anything even remotely resembling a doctor's office.

Searching for Clues

This little angel had been brought to my office by somewhat scared and skeptical parents. I was the doctor of "last resort." Neither parent had ever been adjusted, so you can understand their trepidation at what this chiropractor would do or say. Sarah had undergone every test in the book (and probably some more), and everything was negative. The medical perspective on her condition was simple: seizures of unknown origin, medication to control them and the hope they would not worsen as she aged. Knowing that all her tests were negative actually opened the door to what all other physicians had not assessed, of course, which was the central integrative state of Sarah's nervous system.

Sarah's seizures primarily only occurred when she was about to fall asleep. This is significant because a brain that is not firing well will fire more when faced with the possibility of not waking up later. In other words, if the brain were so deficient that it doubted its own viability to continue to function, it would fire to a greater extent than it should to maintain function.

Helping the Brain

Sarah stopped having her "normal" seizures from the very first adjustment. The first period lasted three days, then eight days, then two weeks. As of this writing, she is no longer on medication and is seizure-free following approximately six visits. Her parents, as you may guess, are no longer afraid of chiropractor.

Featured Helpful Tip: Beautiful Skin From Within

By John Maher, DC, DCBCN, BCIM

In a single lifetime, numerous environmental insults work to damage and alter our health. Indeed, more than 80 percent of visible changes that age the skin come from outside factors like the sun, detergents and pollutants.

Besides minimizing such exposure, we may be able to prevent and reverse some of the visible signs by fighting chronic inflammation and maintaining skin barrier function.

Scientists recognize that many natural foods have anti-inflammatory function, some via healthy fats and some via numerous antioxidants. Skin-healthy fats include avocado, fish oil, flax seed and olive oil. Avocado and olive oil provide barrier-supporting nutrients and anti-inflammatory fats, while flax is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Other important skin-protecting antioxidants include vitamins E and C, selenium and carotenoids; foods like soy; green and white teas, apples, cocoa and berries; and glutathione. Even probiotics help protect the skin. Conversely, some experts suggest we avoid red meat (especially well-done red meat), fried foods, excess salt, and sugar and white flour.
Promoting Skin Health

Interest is growing rapidly with companies shifting focus to promote the "beauty from within" value of their ingredients. Various studies have reported the value of ingredients such as those mentioned above, as well as colostrum and whey.

In one case study, researchers used omega-3 fatty acids to rehydrate skin via nutrition. Dry and sensitive skin affects 50 percent of women and is related to both inadequate hydration and inadequate nutritional status of fatty acids. They found that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (flaxseed and borage oil) increased the omega-3 status in the skin from 2 percent to 24 percent in three months.

Conversely, the typical Western diet favors the production of pro-inflammatory molecules. Efforts should be made to correct this imbalance because increasing the omega-3 ratio in the skin improves the overall health of the skin. These effects cannot be achieved by topical application; they can only be achieved by nutritional intervention.

Collagen Maintenance

As we age, the essential mesh-like collagen structure of the skin's layers breaks down, causing skin to lose its elasticity. Also with aging, certain complexes called glyco-amino-glycans (GAGs) in the skin decline. GAGs help the skin, nails and joints retain moisture. As GAG levels and collagen quality decline, skin dries and loses its elasticity. Lines and wrinkles become visible.

Gelatin is a form of collagen commonly used in foods. It has long been reported that consuming gelatin can improve the structure and health of the skin, hair and nails. Indeed, the main amino acids in gelatin and collagen are the same in the skin, hair and nails.  Collagen and elastin are often incorporated into cosmetics, but neither the collagen nor elastin present in the cosmetics is able to penetrate the skin.
Because of the importance of the special complexes in GAGs, nutrient supplements are often used to provide a more concentrated source of GAGs.

Nutritional science suggests it is possible to reverse some of the damage and to repair the mesh-like structure of the skin and promote cell rejuvenation. Colostrum, the first "milk" of neonate mammals stimulates the growth of collagen cells.  Bovine colostrum was used in the studies.

A Natural Healthy-Skin Regimen

To summarize, the best proactive approach to a lifetime of healthy skin may be staying well-hydrated, avoiding excess drying via detergent cleanser, minimizing oxidation via UV exposure and minimizing inflammation via unhealthy fats and sugars; consuming a variety of antioxidants and omega-3 fats through a varied diet and supplementation.
