Dear Patients,
We have an exciting new technology that many will benefit from, Spinal Decompression Therapy. This therapy is a safe, effective, and affordable treatment for the relief of low back pain, sciatic pain and/or neck pain. |
| Is Spinal Decompression Therapy Right For You? |
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a computerized treatment table which separates specific areas of the spine to achieve a suction of the targeted discs or joints. This suction is intended to pull disc material off the spinal nerves and return the disc material back to its place of origin. Spinal Decompression Therapy also works well with arthritis of the spine to take pressure off inflamed joints. Research came out in 2008, which revealed how spinal decompression therapy can remodel discs, and dramatically relieve compressed/fixated joints in the spine.
Spinal Decompression Therapy is indicated for:
- Herniated disc
- Degenerative disc
- Facet syndrome
- Sciatica
- Post-surgical patients
- Spinal Stenosis
- Low back pain
- Neck pain

How Does Spinal Decompression Work?
Spinal Decompression Therapy works by restoring proper function to an injured disc or spinal joint. This is done by producing a controlled, mechanical traction on the spine using the Spinal Decompression Table. During the pull phase, injured discs are gently stretched apart, producing a suction force inside the disc. This suction draws disc bulges and herniations back into the center of the disc along with oxygen, water, nutrients, and other healing substances. The end result is a strong, healthy, properly functioning disc in about 84% of the patients.
What is Spinal Decompression Therapy? Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical, comfortable traction therapy for the relief of back and leg pain or neck and arm pain. During this procedure, by cycling through distraction and relaxation phases and by proper positioning, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a suction effect within it.
What can this suction effect do? The suction effect accomplishes two things. From a mechanical standpoint, disc material that has protruded or herniated outside the normal confines of the disc can be pulled back within the disc by the suction created within the disc. Also, the suction within the disc stimulates in growth of blood supply, secondarily stimulating a healing response. This results in pain reduction and proper healing at the injured site. Who can benefit from Spinal Decompression Therapy? Those suffering from herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica, pinched nerves, low back pain, neck pain and arthritis. Are there conditions where Spinal Decompression is not indicated?
Spinal decompression therapy is usually not recommended for pregnant women, or patients who have severe osteoporosis, severe obesity or severe nerve damage. However, every patient is evaluated on an individual basis. How often do I take treatment sessions and how long does each session last?
The average treatment is 20-30 visits over a 2-3 month period and each treatment lasts 20 minutes.
Does Dr. Shoemaker prescribe any home therapy? Yes, Dr. Shoemaker will prescribe nutritional supplements that will speed the healing process. I have had spinal surgery, but continue to have pain. Can I try Spinal Decompression Therapy? Spinal decompression therapy can help many people with back pain after failed spinal surgery.
