| An Overview of Change Management That Works! | |
|
|
Greetings!
Change is a bit more common and expected in the private sector, but public sectors are now being forced to make drastic changes and many are not comfortable or prepared to handle this well. There are many issues to consider when implementing change. To short cut this process, is sure to have some less than effective results.
JBM handles change management in a way that has proven to be highly effective for both private and public sectors. Recent work with public schools and government agencies has prepared them well for the inevitable changes with the cuts from the State. Changes implemented are preparation of functional position descriptions, updated clear handbooks to ensure proper communications, focus groups with staff members, morale buildling, conflict resolution, all important to consider in our day to day work but especially during inevitable change. Further, a great deal of time is spent on process review to ensure efficiencies are in place. The sooner you tend to these issues, the better the results!
There is often a panic when faced with the necessary administrative decisions, union/civil service considerations, talent management, assessment, emotional stress related to inevitable change. There are concerns about how to reorganize and how to identify the existing staff to place them appropriately to retain quality. Many organizations do not have functional position descriptions, there are many assumptions about work people are handling, there are often voids in decision making because proper HR tools are not up to date and in place.
Are you spending hours and hours of administrator's time trying to plan for this? Consider a third party review of your situation. JBM has extensive experience working with organizations and businesses just like yours! |

Important "Ingredients" to Effective Change Management
Avoid being "penny wise and pound foolish"
First off, admit what you don't now, what you haven't had experience with and determine help needed. This could be the most cost effective approach to your work during these times! This is not the time to allow budget constraints to distract from handling this process well! The cost of time with administrators not as well versed in change management will be extraordinarily higher than hiring someone to facilitate change. Those that have gone this route with me will agree!
JBM's approches to Change Management
- Collaborative, Inclusion, cooperation
- Focus groups, involve those that know the work best; encouraging creativity, thinking out of the box becomes critical
- Ensure position descriptions are clear, functional, show what a given person in a position "actually" does, not what they "generally" do given any place of employment; we are all unique, functions vary;
- Caring, employee morale matters, alot!
- Empowerment of those that can help provide input on tough decisions
- Process review, current policies, existing documents that apply to governing the business or organization
- Ensure leadership committment
- Build in processes that ensure best possibility of keeping to goals and targets
- Allow employees to "control" what they can, there is a real strong feeling of helplessness and insecurities
- Approach needs to be comprehensive
- Write up the results, plans, actions, goals, timetables, resources etc!
- Communications are continuous and clear
Doing business as you always have will no longer work. It is very healthy to go through this process on a regular basis, critical when you are forced to make change! |
