Greetings!
Here we are at Strategy 7 of Eleven HR Strategies for 2011-  Rebuild Trust and Boost Morale (HR Magazine 1/2011;RGrossman)
The past six strategies certainly are building up to results that every organization should aspire to...strong relationships with trust and a positive employment atmosphere.  In order to determine the morale of your workforce, get feedback.  How did the recession impact morale and how does it compare to now?  Ask employees what is important to them.  Ask what motivates them, what concerns they may have and how they feel about the benefits and overall working conditions.

There is tremendous impact on productivity when morale and trust are low.  Customer service suffers, relationships suffer, profitability and effectiveness suffer.

Too often we feel that "what we don't know won't hurt us"...quite the contrary is true.  One of my clients over the last several years has utilized me extensively to understand the morale of the organization and to find ways to engage employees while improving attitudes and leading toward a work approach that is collaborative. This happens to a be a union environment. This has proven to work exceptionally well.  Previous to this, the employees didn't trust administration in a manner that was desired.  Employees felt undervalued. They felt no one cared.  Now it is quite the opposite!  Feedback I provide from my work with each unit has resulted in significant changes to approaches by management staff, improved resources and processes but most of all, employees feel "heard" and valued!

Such feedback can result in needs identified for supervisors, where training is then provided.  Improvements all around result from regular feedback.

Leaders have to understand that employee input is not only important but imperative if they want to see success at optimal levels.  No one knows their work like they do, their needs, their issues and challenges.  Learn about them and strategically address them.  It will pay off in volumes!

We as leaders need to realize we are teaching as much as we are learning.  The learning process never stops.  Find value from your employees by actively including them and seeking input.  Take the time to show you care!

Sincerely,
