Greetings!
Can you relate to hiring an individual and having expectations due to their resume and formal education to find they are lacking some very important basic skills? If not, you are in the minority. It is all too common for employers to be somewhat disappointed and struggling with how to fill the gaps with the promising hires they are committed to make work out. Errors in hiring are costly in many ways. It all begins with effective hiring, then the focus is on how to obtain optimal performance. Let's review some issues common to employers..... |
|
See if you can relate!
Some basics problems employers are encountering:
- Dependability issues
- Use of technology and "addiction" to texting and social networks - time wasting a REAL issue
- Reading and Writing skills are inadequate
- Work ethic - time off, flexible schedules are very important - balancing schedules and business needs is a challenge
- Ability and readiness to deal with constructive communications - many are very sensitive and obect to receiving constructive feedback on their performance
- Lack of critical thinking ability and creativity
- Inadequate math skills
So what do you do?
- Consider utilizing aptitude tests during the hiring process; screen out those that are not a good "fit"
- Assess ability related to interpersonal communication skills
- Assess whether they are team players
- TRAIN AND... keep in mind, younger workers are not as responsive to the traditional formal training methods, therefore you need to utilize web based training such as webinars, podcasts, social networking as a form of training; they are cost effective, time efficient and appreciated by members of the workforce and management alike!
- Focus on training that improves recruitment approaches, leadership/coaching, performance management, technology utilization, teamwork, conflict resolution and communication skills
- Document the cost of NOT training and getting staff up to speed
- You can't afford not to spend the time and money on training and management of staff
- Focus spending of corporate funds on workforce readiness programs
Successful companies make this commitment to training as well as ensure they are effective at recruiting staff that fit the culture and needs of the organization. Developing strategic partnerships with high schools and higher education can also be helpful to keep the communications open as to what employers need and expect of those leaving such educational settings.
Be open and comfortable with change! The only thing certain in life is change and we need to be prepared and proactive. Those companies and organizations that are not changing will lag in all respects.
