Photography Exhibit Explores Old Asylym
Berkeley County photographer Sterling "Rip" Smith will present a selection of images from his upcoming book "Asylum." The images are an exploration of an extraordinary historical site in the heart of rural West Virginia. The exhibit will be on display starting September 26 in the Old Firehouse Gallery at the Washington Street Artists' Cooperative, 108 North George Street in Charles Town, West Virginia. There will be a reception on Saturday, October 6 from 6 to 8pm at the gallery.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (formerly the Weston State Hospital) is the largest cut stone masonry building in the western hemisphere, second in the world only to the Kremlin in Moscow. Now privately owned, the old asylum building is undergoing preservation and restoration work with funding from government grants, private donations, and income from tours and other activities.
Smith is an award-winning fine art photographer who has exhibited regionally and nationally. Smith's photographs are held in public and private collections throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and as far away as the United Kingdom. Smith is on the Web at www.sterlingimages.com.

Wispy white cloud against a deep blue sky above the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum gives the impression of spirits rising from the clock tower. |
