This Week at the Columbus County Community Farmers Market
November 23-28, 2009 |
Dear ,
Welcome to this edition of our Columbus County Community Farmers Market E-newsletter.
Happy Thanksgiving from Your Friends at the Columbus County Farmers Market
It is especially appropriate during this season of Thanksgiving, that we give thanks for our many blessings. The Columbus County Community Farmers Market has been richly blessed this year with an ever increasing number of loyal patrons, friends and supporters. We want to take this opportunity to say "thank you" for helping to make our 2009 season our best ever! We wish you and your family a safe and happy Thanksgiving! The Farmers Market will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and will reopen on Saturday, November 28.
Friday is "Thank a Farmer Day" in North Carolina
As North Carolina families plan their upcoming Thanksgiving dinner, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler would like them to remember the people who help make it possible: farmers.
"Chances are pretty good that when you sit down for your Thanksgiving meal, you'll be enjoying some food produced right here in North Carolina," Troxler said.
"One out of every seven turkeys cooked at Thanksgiving will come from North Carolina. We also supply enough pork products for one out of every four families in America, and one out of every 13 eggs comes from North Carolina."
In recognition of farmers' contributions to the state and nation, Governor Bev Perdue has proclaimed Friday, Nov. 20, as "Thank a Farmer Day." Click here to read a copy.
"As consumers, we all have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to our agricultural community," Troxler said. "We are fortunate to live in an agriculture-rich state that produces so many different commodities. Our farmers also contribute mightily to our state's $70 billion agribusiness industry, which plays a critical role in our state's economy.
"The holiday season is the perfect time to support our farmers by visiting farmers markets or looking for North Carolina foods at the grocery store."

Sweet Potato Biscuits
Over the past few weeks, we have shared a number of sweet potato recipes. Columbus County (and our surrounding area) is a large producer of sweet potatoes. This week, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, here is another simple, delicious recipe from Taste of Home magazine. Come by the Farmers Market this week to pick up some fresh, local sweet potatoes.
18 servings
Ingredients
2 cups self-rising flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup mashed sweet potatoes
4 to 5 tablespoons milk
Preparation
In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening and sweet potatoes until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in enough milk just until dough clings together. Knead lightly on a floured surface. Roll dough to 1/2-in. thickness. Cut with a 2-in. biscuit cutter and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 450° for 12 minutes or until golden brown.
