Welcome to this edition of our Columbus County Community Farmers Market E-newsletter.
 
Collards4-H 100th Birthday Celebration is Saturday
 
Join us at the Farmers Market this Saturday, November 21, as we celebrate the 100th birthday of 4-H in North Carolina.
 
Current 4-H members and volunteers will be on hand to do presentations on a variety of subjects including horses, livestock, bio-fuel, bees, citizenship and culture.  All 4-H alumni are encouraged to attend and there will be a special gift for all 4-H alumni.
 
The event is free and refreshments will be provided by the Columbus County Community Farmers Market.*
 
*first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
 
More About 4-H in North Carolina
 
NC 4-H FlagThe North Carolina 4-H program is the youth development program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, which is based at N.C. State and N.C. A&T State universities.  More than 239,000 young people between the ages of 5 and 19 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities with the help of 23,000 adult and youth volunteers.
 
The 4-H program began in North Carolina as corn and tomato clubs in 1909 in Ahoskie. 4-H today includes activities ranging from rocketry to workforce development and nutrition programs along with camping at five residential facilities across the state. North Carolina 4-H today is a community of young people who are learning leadership, citizenship and 21st century life skills that will enhance their lives and prepare them to be tomorrow's leaders.
What's Available This Week
Normal hours of operation at the Columbus County Farmers Market are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  During this time of year, the greatest variety of locally grown, farm fresh products is on Saturdays.
 
Vendor TurnipsThere should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables including collards, turnips, cabbage, mustard greens,  okra, peas, butternut squash, squash, zucchini, sweet onions, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggs, pecans, sweet potatoes, Japanese persimmons, pumpkins, gourd crafts, handcrafted jewelry, jams, jellies, pickles, honey, honey soaps, baked goods, and more!

Crunchy Sweet Potato Casserole
Crunchy Sweet Potato CasseroleThanksgiving is just around the corner and here is a great side dish recipe from Taste of Home magazine.  Come by the Farmers Market this week to pick up some fresh, local sweet potatoes.
 
Time
Prep: 15 min. Bake: 25 min 
 
Yield
6 servings
 
Ingredients
2 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
 
TOPPING:
1 cup crushed cornflakes
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
 
Preparation 
In a large bowl, combine the first eight ingredients. Spoon into a greased 1-1/2-qt. baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 20 minutes or until a thermometer reads 160°.  Combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over potatoes. Bake 5-10 minutes longer or until the topping is lightly browned.

Christmas Tree GiftGet ready for Christmas gift giving at our third annual "Christmas from the Heart" Craft Show & Sale.  All items, including crafts, baked goods, jams, jellies, pickles, relishes, etc. must be handcrafted or homemade by local residents.  Vendor spaces are $5 per space. Space reservations are required and available on a first-come, first-served basis.  A vendor/crafter registration form is available online or by calling Carol Shuman at (910) 642-3789.

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  Normal hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  The Market features farmer-grown, farmer-sold products.  Member's farms are visited periodically to assure that all items sold are locally grown by the seller and are of the highest quality.
