Welcome to this edition of our Columbus County Community Farmers Market E-newsletter. 
 
Sweet Potato Day is This Saturday
 
NC Sweet PotatoesJoin us at the Farmers Market this Saturday as we celebrate the local harvest of sweet potatoes.
Our farmers/vendors will have free samples of the delicious and nutritious product (first-come, first-serve while supplies last).

Just in case you missed it - the Columbus County Community Farmers Market helped commemorate the start of the 30th annual Columbus County Agricultural Fair with a float entry in the parade on Tuesday, October 13 - we had a great time!  Go out and enjoy the fair!

Southeastern Community College Offers FARMS Courses
 
Southeastern Community College now enrolling Continuing Education classes through Project Skill-UP Columbus FARMS - Fostering Agriculture Resources for Money and Success!  Courses this fall include plant micropropagation and REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship Through Action Learning) training.  For more information, please call the Columbus County JobLink Career Center at (910) 642-7141, ext. 261.  Click here to download a flyer.

What's Available This Week
The Columbus County Farmers Market is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon with a variety of locally grown, farm fresh products.
 
PumpkinsThere should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables including  turnips, cabbage, mustard greens, collards, okra, peas, butternut squash, squash, zucchini, sweet onions, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggs, pecans, sweet potatoes, Japanese persimmons, pumpkins, gourd crafts, handcrafted jewelry, jams, jellies, pickles, honey, honey soaps, baked goods, and more!

Recipe of the Week
NC Sweet Potato PieNorth Carolina's Favorite Sweet Potato Pie 
 
There are lots of delicious and nutritious recipes on the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission website.  Here is just one that features locally grown sweet potatoes.  Come by the Farmers Market and get some this week!
 
Yield
8 servings 
 
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups Cooked Mashed Sweet Potatoes
3/4 cup Granulated Sugar
1/2 cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar
1/2 cup Packaged French Vanilla Instant Pudding
3/4 cup Evaporated Milk
2 large Eggs, room temperature
6 tbsp. Butter or Margarine, softened
1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1 1/2 tbsp. Vanilla Extract
9 inch Unbaked Pie Shell
 
Preparation 
In a large bowl combine all ingredients and beat at medium speed until well blended. Spread evenly into unbaked pie shell.
 
Bake at 450 degrees F. for 10 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees and bake for 40 minutes longer or until set. Cool on wire rack.
If desired, garnish with whipped cream, raspberries and mint leaves.

Christmas Tree GiftGet ready for Christmas gift giving at our third annual "Christmas from the Heart" Craft Show & Sale.  All items, including crafts, baked goods, jams, jellies, pickles, relishes, etc. must be handcrafted or homemade by local residents.  Vendor spaces are $5 per space. Space reservations are required and available on a first-come, first-served basis.  A vendor/crafter registration form is available online or by calling Carol Shuman at (910) 642-3789.
 
*All events are subject to change or cancellation without notice. Samples and give away items are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  Normal hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  The Market features farmer-grown, farmer-sold products.  Member's farms are visited periodically to assure that all items sold are locally grown by the seller and are of the highest quality.
