Southeastern Community College Offers FARMS Courses
 
Southeastern Community College now enrolling Continuing Education classes through Project Skill-UP Columbus FARMS - Fostering Agriculture Resources for Money and Success!  Courses this fall include plant micropropagation and REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship Through Action Learning) training.  For more information, please call the Columbus County JobLink Career Center at (910) 642-7141, ext. 261.  Click here to download a flyer.

What's Available This Week
The Columbus County Farmers Market is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon with a variety of locally grown, farm fresh products.
 
Vendor TurnipsThere should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables including  collards, okra, peas, butternut squash, zucchini, sweet onions, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggs, pecans, sweet potatoes, pears, Japanese persimmons, pumpkins, gourd crafts, handcrafted jewelry, jams, jellies, pickles, honey, honey soaps, baked goods, and more!

Recipe of the Week
Sweet Potatoes & PearsSweet Potatoes & Pears
October is usually the start of sweet potato harvest and this is an interesting recipe combination to try this fall.  Come by the Farmers Market for some fresh, locally grown sweet potatoes - you might also find some fresh pears if you'd rather use fresh than canned.  Recipe compliments of Simple & Delicious magazine
 
Yield
8 servings 
 
Ingredients
9 cups cubed peeled sweet potatoes (about 4 medium)
4 cups water
1 can (15-1/4 ounces) pear halves, drained
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
 
Preparation 
Place the sweet potatoes in a shallow 3-qt. microwave-safe dish; add water. Cover and microwave on high for 18-20 minutes or until tender. Drain and place in a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients; beat until combined.
 
Nutritional Information
One serving = 3/4 cup; Calories: 286; Fat: 6 g; Saturated Fat: 4 g; Cholesterol: 15 mg; Sodium: 84 mg; Carbohydrate: 57 g; Fiber: 5 g; Protein: 3 g

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  Normal hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  The Market features farmer-grown, farmer-sold products.  Member's farms are visited periodically to assure that all items sold are locally grown by the seller and are of the highest quality.
