Welcome to this edition of our Columbus County Community Farmers Market E-newsletter.

The Columbus County Community Farmers Market is pleased to congratulate the newest class of graduates in the Cooperative Extension Service Master Gardener program.  The Market hosted a graduation dinner for them on Thursday, August 13, at Dale's Seafood in Whiteville.
 
The Extension Master Gardener program is an educational program designed to enhance public education in consumer horticulture.  It provides educational assistance to the citizens of the county concerning lawns, fruits, vegetables, trees, and ornamentals through the utilization of a trained and supervised volunteer staff.  Certification in the Columbus County Master Gardener Program requires participation in a 15-week training class.
 
We are excited that several of the new Certified Master Gardeners have expressed an interest in getting involved with various Farmers Market activities. 
 
Kids Back-to-School Fun Day a Tremendous Success!
 
Healthy CaroliniansThe second annual Kid's Back-to-School Day was a tremendous success with more than 300 people attending.
 
Various community organizations including Columbus County Health Department, Columbus County Healthy Carolinians, Columbus County Partnership for Children (Smart Start), Columbus County RSVP Program, and Whiteville City Schools participated in the event.
 
Free school supplies such as composition books, rulers, glue sticks, pencils, pencil pockets, and hand sanitizers were provided to 200 students.  Free popcorn and lemonade were enjoyed by the entire family.
 
Media coverage included The News Reporter, WTXY Radio, and News 14 Carolina TV from Wilmington.
 
StorytellerLocal story-teller Lynda Johnston entertained the children with lively stories and songs accompanied by the autoharp.

What's Available This Week
The Columbus County Farmers Market is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon with a large variety of farm fresh products.
 
Ruth VendorThere should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables including boiled peanuts, peaches, plums, cantaloupes, watermelons, butterbeans, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, okra, peas, scallions, squash (several varieties), zucchini, sweet onions, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggs, pecans, gourd crafts, handcrafted jewelry, jams, jellies, pickles, honey, honey soaps, baked goods, fresh cut flowers, and more!

Fried Green TomatoesFried Green Tomatoes
This week's recipe is for a delicious, southern favorite - Fried Green Tomatoes.  This and several other recipes are available in an article entitled "We Say Tomato," in the July/August 2008 issue of Food Everyday magazine.  Available online at www.marthastewart.com

Yield
4 servings
 
Ingredients
2 medium green tomatoes
1/3 cup light mayonnaise
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs, beaten
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 1/2 teaspoons seafood seasoning
1/2 cup vegetable oil, such as safflower
 
Directions
  1. In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, lemon juice, and hot sauce. Season with salt and pepper, and set sauce aside.
  2. Place flour, eggs, and cornmeal each in a separate bowl, and season each with 1/2 teaspoon seafood seasoning.
  3. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with paper towels. Working with a few slices at a time, dip tomatoes in flour, then eggs, and finally cornmeal.
  4. In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium. Working in two batches, fry tomatoes until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side; transfer to baking sheet, and sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately with sauce.

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  Normal hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  The Market features farmer-grown, farmer-sold products.  Member's farms are visited periodically to assure that all items sold are locally grown by the seller and are of the highest quality.
