Welcome to this edition of our Columbus County Community Farmers Market E-newsletter.

Thursday was an exciting and enjoyable day as more than 75 individuals from Columbus Industries in Whiteville, visited the Columbus County Farmers Market.
 
In addition to learning more about the Farmers Market and how food is grown and sold locally, the group of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness and substance abuse issues enjoyed homemade peach and blueberry ice cream.  Each person also received a Farmers Market souvenir and a copy of the current issue of Farmers Market News.
 
Mark your calendar now for our next special event - Kids "Back-to-School" Fun Day on Saturday, August 15, 2009 (see Upcoming Events below).
What's Available This Week
The Columbus County Farmers Market is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon with a large variety of farm fresh products.
 
VeggiesThere should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables including blackberries, blueberries, peaches, plums, cantaloupes, watermelons, beets, broccoli, butterbeans, cabbage, carrots, collards, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, okra, peas, scallions, squash, zucchini, sweet onions, mustard greens, turnips, radishes, rutabagas, potatoes, peppers, sweet corn, tomatoes, eggs, pecans, herbs, gourd crafts, handcrafted jewelry, jams, jellies, pickles, honey, honey soaps, baked goods, fresh cut flowers, and more!

Recipe of the Week
Southern Fried OkraSouthern Fried Okra
Okra is one of those southern delicacies that can be prepared in a variety of ways.  This week's recipe features the tasty, deep-fried okra that is considered a local favorite.  Be sure to use the fresh, locally grown okra available at the Columbus County Community Farmers Market.  This side dish recipe is from Taste of Home magazine.
 
Time
Prep & Cook Time:  30 minutes
 
Yield
2 servings
 
Ingredients
1-1/2 cups sliced fresh okra
3 tablespoons buttermilk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornmeal
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic herb seasoning blend
1/8 teaspoon pepper
Oil for deep-fat frying
Additional salt and pepper, optional
 
Directions
Pat okra dry with paper towels. Place buttermilk in a shallow bowl. In another shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, seasoning blend and pepper. Dip okra in buttermilk, then roll in cornmeal mixture.
 
In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat 1 in. of oil to 375°. Fry okra, a few pieces at a time, for 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Season with additional salt and pepper if desired.

Columbus County Community Farmers Market will join markets around the country in celebrating the annual National Farmers Market Week as proclaimed by United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

America's Favorite Farmers MarketsThe popularity of farmer's markets continues to grow around the country and lots of national organizations are doing their part to recognize and promote the importance of local food!  As a result, the Columbus County Community Farmers Market is participating in two national contests!

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  Normal hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  The Market features farmer-grown, farmer-sold products.  Member's farms are visited periodically to assure that all items sold are locally grown by the seller and are of the highest quality.
