Welcome to this edition of our Columbus County Community Farmers Market E-newsletter.
 
Information BoothWe invite you to stop by our new Information Booth near the main entrance of the Farmers Market.  Volunteers are helping us staff the booth which has community information, health brochures, recipes, etc.  You may also purchase Farmers Market merchandise including environmentally-friendly reusable shopping bags, t-shirts, window decals, and key rings.

In addition, the Information Booth is where you swipe your EBT, Visa or MasterCard credit or debit cards and receive you tokens for shopping at the Market!

What's Available This Week
John Fipps VendorIt is still fairly early in the 2009 growing season.  Although the Farmers Market is open on Tuesday, Thursday from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon, Saturday will remain our largest Market day until local production increases.
  
There should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables including strawberries, broccoli, garden peas, squash, onions, cucumbers, mustard greens, kale, new potatoes, pecans, herbs, gourd crafts, jams, jellies, honey, honey soaps, baked goods and more!

Fresh Broccoli Salad
 
Fresh Broccoli SaladUse some of our fresh, locally grown broccoli in this simple yet delicious and low fat salad recipe from Taste of Home magazine.  
 
Time
Prep: 5 min. + chilling
 
Yield
12 servings
 
Ingredients
2 pounds fresh broccoli, cut into bite-size pieces
1 package (12 ounces) fresh mushrooms, sliced
2 small red onions, thinly sliced into rings
1 can (2-1/4 ounces) sliced ripe olives, drained
1-1/2 cups prepared Italian salad dressing
1/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
 
Directions 
In a large bowl combine all ingredients; toss to coat. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours.

One cup serving (prepared with reduced-fat Italian salad dressing): Calories: 66; Fat: 2 g; Saturated Fat: 0 g; Cholesterol: 3 mg; Sodium: 182 mg; Carbohydrate: 9 g; Fiber: 0 g; Protein: 5 g; Diabetic Exchange: 2 vegetable, 1/2 fat

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, North Carolina near the Department of Social Services.  Normal hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 7:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.  The Market features farmer-grown, farmer-sold products.  Member's farms are visited periodically to assure that all items sold are locally grown by the seller and are of the highest quality.
