Actually, in Louisville (home to Kentucky Colonels Headquarters) it is more like Derby month... spread across parts of April and May. Events and parties, we call it Derby Festival, started in mid April. During this period we race just about everything that has two or four legs. One of the local colleges has a rat race, with real rats. For humans there is a race for waiters carrying glasses of wine, a mini-marathon and a full marathon. We have a steamboat race, a hot air balloon race and, of course, the one for horses that will have much of the world tuned in late Saturday afternoon. Here at Headquarters we're looking forward to welcoming some 600 Kentucky Colonels and guests to the Derby Extravaganza held in the Kentucky Derby Museum on the grounds of Churchill Downs. Thousands of other Colonels will hold or attend Derby parties around the world. We wish all a Grand Time.

Grant Requests Set A Record |
A sign of the times? Maybe. The amount of money requested by Good Works Program applicants this year totals nearly 3.8 million dollars. That is a record amount and, more than double the amount available in the fund. Review of the applications begins this month. The review ranges from confirming the applicant's status with the IRS (required) to actual visits to the organizations requesting assistance in order to get a better feel for the depth of the need involved. The Board of Trustees will make final decisions on 2012 grants during a meeting in August.
An interesting note about the requirements from the IRS... this year we are required to confirm that organizations applying for grants are not included on the government's list of organizations that support terrorists. |
The Honorable Order has again been successful in challenging the use of one of its trademarks. "Kentucky Colonels" and "The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels" are both registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In the latest case, a company had asked the office to allow the use of "Kentucky Colonel" as a brand name for tobacco products. The Honorable Order filed opposition to the request and the office upheld our position that to approve the request would have an adverse effect on our existing trademark. |
