Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels

Pomperoser - April 2012
Thank You!

Kentucky Colonel response was immediate and very generous!  Immediately following those devastating tornadoes of early March, the Honorable Order's Board of Trustees voted to extend $20,000 for emergency relief for food and shelter to those individuals who suffered from the storms.  The assistance was announced in an email to members on Sunday, March 4.  Instantly, donations started pouring in from individual Colonels across the country and from other nations.  Within a week, we increased the relief to $32,000.  The amount has now surpassed $38,000.  Indeed, Kentucky Colonels Care!

Another Kitchen Sink?

"Two persons contacted me within 2 days of my initial call - their experiences they shared with me are invaluable - it really made my day! I continue to recall our conversations to help me through this 'bump in the road' of life."

We reported last month that many Colonel grants do not have "attention grabbing" qualities. The example was a grant for the purchase of a kitchen sink.  This story is about a filing cabinet.  Friends for Life Cancer Support works out of a one room office with 2 part-time employees and 250 volunteers.  They connect cancer patients, such as the one quo
filing cabinetted above, with survivors who provide support and resources.   The organization's grant request was for funds to purchase a filing cabinet.  The grant was awarded and this is an excerpt from their follow up report:  "The predecessor of this humble filing cabinet was a black number that was so dented, one drawer wouldn't close and the key was long lost. This cabinet may not seem a noteworthy item, but the contents locked within are priceless, holding hundreds of stories of endurance, triumph over pain and fear of our volunteers who have survived some form of cancer"
Unusual...

Here in Kentucky we have two seasons.  Basketball season and Derby season.  This year they are almost overlapping and since we still have two state teams in the basketball tournament,  it is a bit difficult to concentrate on making the switch from one season to the other.  But, it is just 5 weeks and counting to the 2012 Kentucky Derby (May 5).  We have an unusual situation at this late date... we still have a handful of tickets availablehorse for the Kentucky Colonels Derby Extravaganza.  The actual number is 24 tickets for the Derby event and 17 for the Kentucky Oaks which is held the day before the Derby.  Details for the two events are on this page of our web site. Ticket prices are $625 each for the Derby Extravaganza and $350 each for the Kentucky Oaks.  You must be an active member of the Honorable Order to purchase the tickets.

Honor Flight

The next Kentucky Colonels "Honor Flight" is tentatively scheduled for October 20.  The charter flight will take 100 plus WWII veterans to Washington, DC to visit the WWII and Iwo Jima Memorials.  This will be the fifth flight sponsored by the Honorable Order.  This one will be paid for in large part by another anonymous donation. This one is from the same Kentucky Colonel whose overwhelming generosity allowed us to sponsor a full flight last October.  For information and a schedule of all Honor Flights nationwide, visit this web site.
