Colonel :
In the upper right hand corner, there is a number that may not have any meaning to you. To us, it is the unique number assigned to you by our computer data base. The number does not relate to anything such as the year of your commission or the number of Colonels in the world. So what's the big deal? Well, we have everyone listed in the data base by their name as shown on the actual Commission, but we have discovered that a lot of folks actually go by a middle name or a shortened name such as Bill instead of William. Should Bill reply to this email with a change of address or whatever, the number will help us make sure we are changing the address for the correct person.

The photo of happy children at the top of this month's e-letter is intended to represent the focus the Honorable Order places on assisting children in need as grant requests are analyzed. The importance of the children was driven home to us recently when a home for abused and troubled children reminded us of a famous quote relating to scouting. Our records do not tell us if Forest Witcraft was a Kentucky Colonel, but if he was not, he probably should have been! We say that despite the fact that very little is known about the man. He apparently was involved in scouting and, in the October 1950 issue of Scouting Magazine, he wrote an article titled The Power of One Man. Here, in part, is how he is quoted today: "I am not a Very Important Man, as importance is commonly rated. (But) a hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a child."
(Note: In the original article Witcraft apparently used the word "boy" as in boy scout, rather than "child")

A Kitchen Sink
|
Many of the grants awarded by the Good Works Program do not necessarily have attention grabbing qualities. New Perceptions is an organization that serves children and adults with mental retardation or developmental disabilities. Executive Director Betty Bernard reported to us: " A "kitchen sink" may not sound like an exciting grant award, but for adults with disabilities, it is a wonderful addition to their Life Skills program area. Great service by the Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program." New Perceptions served 658 individuals last year.
