Your $$$ at Work

Is one of these students hungry? Statistics tell us it is likely. Over the past few years, the Honorable Orde r has experienced a rapid increase in requests to assist with the so-called "backpack programs". These programs provide food for needy students to take home from school on the weekends. Recently we asked some of the supervisors of the programs to tell us about students being helped. This is a sample of what we heard:
"One recipient is a seventeen year old special education student. He lives in a dilapidated trailer with his alcoholic mother and his father, who lost his job last year. The father has to hide the small amount of money they receive through unemployment to pay for the rent, utilities, and groceries. If he doesn't, the mother will buy alcohol with it. Yet this young man, like many others, is resilient and upbeat despite the challenges he faces every day at home and school. He comes to my office every Friday to pick up his bag, and he is very grateful for it. The program gives this young man one less worry in his tumultuous life. His home life may be stressful and school may be hard for him, but every Friday he can pick up a bag of food and know that there are people in the world who care about his physical, mental, and spiritual well-being."

Tax Records |
As noted above, all donations to the Honorable Order's Good Works Program are tax deductible... IF you itemize deductions on Schedule A. The IRS does have some rules related to charitable deductions, the main one being record keeping. You do not have to submit proof of a donation to the IRS but, according to the rules, you have to have documentation is case they do ask to see it. This is the IRS statement: "For any contribution made in cash, regardless of the amount, you must maintain as a record of the contribution a bank record (such as a canceled check or credit card statement) or a written record from the charity. Do not attach the record to your tax return. Instead, keep it with your other tax records." Should you be audited and not have bank or credit card records, we may be able to help. The Honorable Order maintains rather extensive records on donations. |

A familiar name on our letterhead and a familiar face at Kentucky Colonel social events for the past 30 years has retired* from the Honorable Order's Board of Trustees. George Sullivan's service to the Order over the years was above exemplary. George retired from his "day job" a couple of years ago and will now devote most of his energies to hunting, fishing and golf. (*Editors note: Actually George just thinks he retired. We reserve the right to call upon him and his extensive financial expertise.) |
