Watch Your $$$
at Work!

Maryhurst, an organization which cares for teenage girls who have suffered significant trauma due to abuse and neglect, will be featured on ABC TV's 20/20 Program this week (Friday night in most locations).  Maryhurst has received several grants from the Good Works Program.
DID YOU KNOW?

As the end of the year approaches, tax planning may be on your mind.  We offer a reminder that a
$100 contribution  to the Good Works Program will not only help the Honorable Order sponsor programs such as Honor Flight but, might cost you only $65. A $1,000 contribution could cost you only $650.

You do, of course,  have to write the check for the full amount but,
with the IRS allowed deduction(s) $65 or $650 could wind up being the actual cost of supporting the Honorable Order's Good Works Program (Depending on your tax bracket).

All contributions to the Good Works Program are tax deductible.  THIS LINK will take you to the secure web contribution page.

Colonel  :

Earlene extends her thanks and appreciation this holiday season.  The 59 year old recently was fitted for her first new pair of glasses in over 30 years.  "I was wearing glasses that people had given me... I had lost all hope (but) there are actually people who really care.  Now I can see without getting those awful headaches."  Earlene, along with several dozen other folks, received new glasses as a result of a grant from the Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program to New Eyes for the Needy, a New Jersey based organization with operations in 45 states.  We thank you for your continued support of our charitable efforts.
Singing Again (After all these years)

Meet The Singing Colonels -- and according to a writer for the Florida publication Seniors Today, "Wow! Are they good!"

quartet

They met in college in the early 1950's and formed a quartet.  After college, each went his separate way... 3 made careers in the military services and the 4th became a minister.  All became Kentucky Colonels along the way and in 2003, at a reunion "We found out we could still sing", reports Colonel Bill Vendle.  And sing they have been doing, entertaining veterans at VA Medical Centers and nursing homes across the country.  So far they have toured Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and Kentucky.  Texas and California are scheduled for next year.  Col. Vendl who lives in California sings lead, Col. Jim Winn of Kentucky is the bass, Col. Hugh Brooks from Florida, baritone and Col. Dave Caylor of California, tenor.

TA-DA (It's finished!)

uniform

His wife has refer
red to the project as "Stephen's Folly".  To some, the word folly would imply foolishness but, Colonel Stephen Lautens, of Toronto, Canada,  no doubt prefers the definition as applied to architecture, i.e. highly decorative with secondary practical functions. For the past 3 years or so, Col. Lautens has been attempting, with the Honorable Order's blessings, to recreate the Kentucky Colonel Uniform described in the minutes of a 1931 meeting of the Honorable Order's predecessor organization.  Working with the Custom Uniform Company of Aurora, Colorado he has succeeded, as evidenced in the photo above. Col. Lautens readily admits "I drove the uniform company crazy with the custom order and details".The material of the uniform is a bit different than what was used 80 plus years ago but otherwise, it is virtually an exact replica of the few original uniforms made in the 1930's.  The cost?  Several hundred dollars, but now that a prototype has been developed that should come down a bit.  If you would like more information, Click Here to email Col. Lautens or Click Here to email Deb Webster at Custom Uniform.

Well, we know there was at least one winner among the nearly 2,300 who attended this year's Kentucky Colonels Day on Millionaire's Row at Historic Churchill Downs.  Colonels and guests in attendance represented 33 states, Canada, Scotland and Switzerland. In addition, over 800 attended the Get Acquainted Reception the evening before.  Photos from both events are posted HERE.

The events are held as a "THANK YOU" celebration for Colonels who support the Good Works Program.  The 2012 celebration is tentatively scheduled for November 9 and 10.
