We got letters  (about our letters)

 mailman

Our story last month on the test we conducted involving our "Non-Profit" mail permit produced a considerable amount of feedback.  Here are some samples;

 Colonel Allen of Kentucky "As a retired mailman, (and proud of it!!), I do resent the continued use of the word 'snail' mail (by all organizations).  There are few organizations out there in the heat of summer or the freezing cold of winter, in pouring down rain, being chased by dogs, day after day, providing you with a vital service."

Colonel Thomas of Oklahoma, another USPS retiree "Bulk Business Mail is not a method I would use because even with requested delivery dates, first class and 2nd class will always have priority. What if a carrier has 3-5 sets of "BBM" and each one has a requested delivery date that is the same? Guess what, something has to be late unless the USPS is willing to get staffing and overtime to take care of that situation."

Colonel Flannigan of North Carolina "In considering mailing and time - think about email for delivery.  Contributions can be made on line with a simple click, cards can be printed, links to the emporium are easy and the cost of sending $0"

And, from Colonel Niles of Indiana "The USPS lost my Passport in May....and so far I still haven't received it!  Yes, I had to cancel that one and reorder another one so I could go on a trip to Asia!  I can see why they are in financial problems....poor management I think!"

Thanks to all who offered comments and suggestions.

The PAGE 25 Medal
Medal
We needed a photo at the last minute so we went to our library and pulled one of the Golden Eagle Medallion for the empty space on page 25 of the current print edition of the Pomperoser.  In hindsight, we should have given some explanation of the photo.  In response to those who have asked or wondered about it, here is that explanation.

The Golden Eagle Medallion was designed in 1931 by Colonel R. H. Ziehm, who was one of the founding members of the first Kentucky Colonel organization. The medal was approved during the May 2, 1931 organizational meeting of the Kentucky Colonels. Minutes of the meeting say the medallion was to be "worn suspended on a ribbon hung about the neck."

These first Golden Eagle Medallions were produced in limited numbers by the Balfour Company at a quoted price of: $6.50 for 14K gold filled or $20.00 for "solid gold" (the price of gold in 1931 was $20.67 per ounce). After the first production series, it seems no other Golden Eagle Medallions were produced until the late 1970s. That production run consisted of 6 medals costing $262.63 each (gold prices in 1978 had climbed to $184 per ounce)..  Five were awarded to individuals who had been instrumental in the success of the Honorable Order during its first fifty years.  The 6th medal is in the Headquarters archives.  It was used as the basis for another limited production run in 2008 when the Honorable Order established the Legion of Merit (we did not use gold that run). Membership in the Legion of Merit is granted for exceptional service to, and for support of, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Flying the Colors

 SparrowFamily
Colonel Walter Sparrow and family of Pennsylvania proudly displayed the Honorable Order's flag during a special outing on their boat this past summer.  It was the annual Canadarago Lake boat parade. (Canadarago Lake is in central New York).  Sparrow's "Lucky Kentucky" entry won first place.  In addition to the Colonel's flag, the boat featured a Churchill Downs theme complete with Twin Spires, a costume horse and jockeys.
