Snail Mail
|

The news media have reported many stories this summer about the financial problems facing the
U S Postal Service. We don't mean to add to those woes but it turns out USPS problems create problems for the Honorable Order. We utilize a "non-profit" mailing permit for most items we send you by regular mail. The reason is cost. We receive a considerable discount on postage with the special status permit. However, "non-profit" mail is considered "bulk" or "standard" mail by the USPS. That means it is at the bottom of the priority list for delivery.
So, how long does it take for a piece of mail to get from us to you? In August, we conducted a test to find out. The results were a bit discouraging. We selected 246 Colonels representing all 50 states and assembled a test mailing to them. The Colonels were asked to let us know when (if) it was received. The USPS says "standard" mail should be delivered in 2 - 9 days. It also notes, however, that delivery of standard mail is not guaranteed. We have heard from nearly 80% of the Colonels selected for the test. The chart above shows the number of days it took for delivery. The red section represents those who did not receive the letter at all. The area labeled YES represents those who received it but were away from home at the time of delivery and could not confirm the actual date.
Because of the results, we will be making some adjustments in our mailing schedules. We will also, at times, bite the bullet and utilize a more expensive class of postage.

Thanks to the Kentucky Colonels who live in Kentucky and who proudly display the Honorable Order's special vehicle license tag. In addition to their regular support of the Good Works Program, these folks pitched in to make up a record total for the amount contributed as they purchased or renewed the plate during Kentucky's 2010 - 2011 fiscal year. The funds are collected by the County Court Clerks who run the state's vehicle licensing program. The money is forwarded to the Kentucky Department of Transportation and an annual payment is made to the Good Works Program. Over the 5 year life of the project, it has provided in excess of $202,000 for the Good Works Program. |
Kentucky Colonels Derby Extravaganza |
For those waiting for information on the 2012 Kentucky Colonels Derby Extravaganza... we hope to have the information out later this month. We are currently waiting for Churchill Downs to provide information on ticket prices for the 138th Derby. They have told us there will be a price increase but they haven't told us exactly how much.
If you collect Derby memorabilia, the new Derby Glass design is out. The glasses are expected to be available around November 1. Organizations that sell the glasses, such as the Kentucky Derby Museum, are taking pre-orders now.
