Colonel :

The contribution from the Colonel in Florida had an attention grabbing phrase on the line of the check that is intended for you to list the "for" or description of the check.  The phrase:  "From the Heart".  It reminded us that we don't express enough gratitude to you for your support of the Honorable Order's Good Works Program.  Please know that it is "from the heart" that we extend thanks and appreciation for your continued support... not only from those of us who work daily with the Honorable Order but also on behalf of the thousands of individuals whose lives are made better because of your contributions.

A warm blanket - more than just security!

warmer

To Charlie Brown's best friend Linus, life is unbearable without his always at hand security blanket.  Here's a brief story on how your Good Works Program contributions are providing blanket comfort for some real people in Eastern Kentucky because of that gadget shown on the right... a blanket "warmer".

A few days ago, a family member of one of our patients told us "You just wouldn't believe the grin on my brother's face every time they lay one of those warm blankets on him.  It rejuvenates him."  She went on, "He just doesn't have many pleasures left in this life but the warmth of those blankets is certainly one of them." From our patients, their families and the entire staff of Hospice Care Plus, we thank the members of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels around the world for making this small, yet important act of kindness possible to their fellow Kentuckians.

The blanket warmer has a price tag of $5,611.90 (delivered).  The Good Works Program contributed $5,000 toward the purchase.  By the way, a bit of trivia; Linus' name is actually Lionel van Pelt.

D-Day Honor Flight
General Dempsey
It was the largest amphibious invasion in world history, with over 160,000 troops involved in the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June, 1944. The air assault had another 24,000.  On the 67th anniversary of that decisive WWII day, the Honorable Order helped sponsor a trip for some 100 veterans of the war to fly to Washington, DC to visit "their" memorial.  They were greeted by Army Chief of Staff and soon-to-be Chairman of the Joint Chief's of Staff General Martin Dempsey.  General Dempsey is shown greeting some of the Vets in the photo.  He made an effort to greet each one.  Among the Vets on the trip was 93 year old Gertrude Gay, shown in the photo below and to the left.  Gertrude was one of the first nurses on Omaha Beach. The third photo (right) is of an unidentified Vet who is recording his visit by taking a photo from inside the Memorial with the vet and monumentWashington Monument in the background.  Incidentally, we "promoted" General Dempsey during the day.  He is now a Kentucky Colonel.  We will publish a photo of the presentation of the Commission in our annual print newsletter which you will receive, along with the 2012 Membership Card, around October 1.  If you know of a WWII Veteran who has not visited the Memorial, and if they are able to travel, you can obtain an application for participation in an Honor Flight at  this web site.  One final note, the next flight to be sponsored by the Honorable Order is tentatively scheduled for October 6.  A very special story on that flight will also appear in the fall print edition of the newsletter.

SOLD OUT - Again!

The 2011 Kentucky Colonels Day on Millionaire's Row at Historic Churchill Downs is sold out!  Because of requests in
race crowd past years for far more tickets than we had available, this year we expanded the seating capacity from 1,952 to 2,216.  The tickets were gone in a matter of days with Colonels from 33 states and Canada snapping them up.  If you want to make plans for the 2012 event, set aside the weekend of November 9 - 11.  Please note that date is a long way off and is subject to change.  The photo was taken above the finish line during last year's event.

Flying the Colors

Among the photos shared with us recently is the one below from Colonel David Shelton who lives on Florida's Gulf Coast.  Along with the Stars and Strips and the flag of the Honorable Order is the blue flag of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Colonel Shelton is a long time Florida resident but a native of Kentucky.
