Surprise Endorsements
It happens now and then... and, it happened again last week. A check arrived ($200) at Headquarters but, try as we might, we could not locate the Northern Ohio sender in our data base of Kentucky Colonels. We contacted the sender in writing and this response came by email: "I don't have a (Colonel's) commission. A friend of mine told me about her father's association with the Colonels and his subsequent pride. I ordered a few things for her, read your enclosed pamphlet, and thought I'd send you a donation. Keep up the Good Works." The pamphlet referred to is a short history of the Honorable Order which is sent along with Emporium orders and included in the package sent to new Colonels. You can download a copy of it by CLICKING HERE. And, keep spreading the word!

Honor Flight Tribute
The Good Works Program will sponsor another "Honor Flight" this summer. It will be the 3rd that members of the Honorable Order have made possible. The Honor Flight Network is a national organization of volunteers who work to transport WWII veterans to Washington, DC and the World War Two WWII Memorial. The organization has collectively flown over 62,000 vets to DC as of the end of 2010. The Bluegrass Chapter of Honor Flight (organized by Kentucky Colonel Brian Duffy) was recently inducted into the Kentucky Aviation Museum's Hall of Fame. A wonderful video explaining the history of the Honor Flight was produced by the museum. It runs about 6 minutes and you can view it at this web site: Honor Flight Video . Incidentally, the photo is of three veterans who were on the last flight sponsored by the Honorable Order.

The Bronze Door
"This guard directed me to a small office just inside THE BRONZE DOOR. I was now in the palace of His Holiness Pope John Paul II."
The quote is from a 4 page "report" sent to us in 1985 by Colonel James Wright of Florida. He had just returned from Rome where he delivered a Kentucky Colonel Commission to John Paul II. Yes, we do mean Pope John Paul II. This month's "Archives item" is another letter we proudly display on the wall here at Headquarters. It is a letter from the Secretariat of State of Vatican City written to the then Commanding General of the Honorable Order. (See photo below.) The last paragraph of the letter states: "His Holiness cordially invokes God's gifts of peace and joy upon you and all the members of this worthy organization." But, as delightful as the letter is, the "report" from Colonel Wright may be even more so. We have attached the full report in a PDF file. To read the report CLICK HERE.
