Christmas Joy(s)

toys

Huge Teddy Bears, footballs, mittens, knit caps, t-shirts, school supplies, etc. etc.  Boxes and boxes of all sorts of items made Christmas a delightful time for hundreds of needy children in the Louisville, KY area.  All thanks to quick thinking by the wife of Colonel Stephen Marasso of Illinois.  She contacted Hdq. when she heard an organization she volunteered with had excess donated items.  We contacted the organization (which requested that we not use its name) and made arrangements to have the items shipped to us.  The local Salvation Army had announced that it had 3,000 children more than it could take care of with Christmas Gifts.  The items arrived at Hdq. on the 23rd.  They were picked up by the Salvation Army and distributed to the children on the 24th. The Salvation Army says with this gift and some other last minute donations, all 3,000 children received gifts. The total cost of our project was about $110 in shipping charges.

Thank you for remembering the Good Works Program in your charitable giving.

Care
Colonel :

Our humble thanks to all 35,401 Colonels who made contributions to the Good Works Program during 2010.  The amount contributed totaled $1,669,660.  Another $57,800 was received from other sources.  Contributions were received from a total of 30 nations.  Applications for funding from charitable and educational organizations are already coming in to Headquarters.  If you would like to review the guidelines we use in distributing the funds, please visit this page on our web site.

For those in the USA, the Internal Revenue Service requires documentation for some donations.  The Honorable Order issues "acknowledgments" for all donations of $25 or higher if the contributor has an email address.  Readers of this newsletter all have email addresses and thus your acknowledgment may have been sent to you by email.  If you do not have your 2010 acknowledgment and you think you will need a copy, please let us know as soon as possible.  By the way, we call it an "acknowledgment" because the Postal Service will not allow the use of the word "receipt" if we mail utilizing our non-profit permit.  Go figure!

Green Beret Hall of Fame

A Kentucky Colonel Salute to Colonel John Cleckner, Sr. of California. Colonel Cleckner is a Vietnam Veteran (Major, United States Army Special Forces).  Earlier this winter he was inducted into the Special Forces Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member of the 1st Special Forces Regiment.  John received his Kentucky Colonel Commission in 1968.  In the photo below, he is being presented the Hall of Fame Order from the Secretary of the Army by the Commanding General of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center.

The handsome fellow in the photo was conceived by artist Terrell Dickey in 1978 for Willet Distilling Company.  Willet made the image into a decanter and paid the Honorable Order $5,000 for the right to use the our logo on the base.  The decanter was sold as a collectible item.  A version filled with 16.9 oz of Old Bardstown Bourbon (80 proof) was also offered.  Apparently as a marketing tool the Company also issued a 10 in. x 17 in. art print.  The Emporium obtained some of the prints and offered them for sale.  We still have about 250 of them in the attic.  We also have a dozen or so of the decanters.  They were give to us a few years ago by a Colonel who had bought a case of the empty version when they were first available.  Unlike the Jim Beam decanter featured a few years back, this item was not sold in mass and does have some collectible value.  Now and then one will sell on ebay in the $50 range.
