Number 1 Brother
Sixtee n year old Victor will soon leave Tulsa, Oklahoma for Michigan State University where he will study engineering. That's quite a contrast to the picture from 9 years ago when Victor failed the third grade. At that time, Victor lived "... without a father and in an area where gangs are in control". Then, Victor met Arthur Rasher. "If it was not for Art Rasher, I do not know where my life would have been", he says. Kentucky Colonel Arthur Asher is a professor at the University of Tulsa and, as a result of his involvement with Victor he is the Big Brothers / Big Sisters 2010 Big Brother of the Year. The photo is Colonel Rasher receiving congrats from the President in the Oval Office. Colonel Rasher received his Commission in 1994. In addition to his considerable educational and charitable work in Oklahoma, he is a valued supporter of the Honorable Order's Good Works Program.

And the Drinks are on...
WWII veteran Colonel Hub Erickson of Illinois (on left with Commanding General Jim Lindsey and Col. Robert McNally of Michigan) celebrated 50 years of being a Kentucky Colonel by bringing his family to Colonels' Day on Millionaire's Row at Churchill Downs. He first offered to buy drinks for others who had achieved that milestone but then we told him he was one of 69 Colonels who have celebrated the half century mark. Congratulations to all! And, many thanks to Colonel Hub for his longstanding support of the Good Works Program. The photo was taken at the Friday night Get Acquainted Reception attended by about 800. 2,000 enjoyed the day at the Downs. The 2011 event will be held Nov. 11 & 12. In photo on right, Col. Ronny Bryant of Ohio captured wife Paula relaxing by the Twin Spires. The view is from the 5th floor balcony at Churchill Downs. If you would like to see other photos from this year's event, more than 300 are posted. Click Here to visit the site. Colonel Bob Kocher, also from Ohio, produced a nice video of his group's day at the Downs. To view the video click this link.

Colonel's Corner
Hello Kentucky Colonels: Thought I'd share a Halloween tidbit with you all. I decided to dress up for halloween this year and joined in two parades. I decided to do the likeness of 5 star Gen. Douglas MacArthur although most of today's kids didn't know of him. I did purchase a replica hat last summer not knowing that it would come in handy now (angels give us ideas to act on) and had 5 Ky. Colonel medals to work into my Halloween outfit. I have just one medal (good conduct) from USAF 1960-1964, but decided not to wear a real one. While still in costume (our license to pretend) I stopped in a pizza shop to pick up an order to go. An older woman sauntered up to me and asked "did you earn those medals?" Obviously she didn't take a close look at them. I paused for a moment and then responded with "yes maam!" She had no further questions. Thinking to myself, yep I earned them by donating money in support of homeless children, a most worthy endeavor. If I had dressed up as Abe Lincoln would she have asked me what law school I attended? Ha. Blessings, Col Bob Cassity (Ohio)
HOKC 1992 (temporary promotion from colonel to general for a special purpose; it was fun)
