Nice Article

Thanks to Colonel Ken Eckland of Florida for passing on that journalist and new Kentucky Colonel, Cator Sparks of New York, produced a Huffington Post piece related to his commission.  THIS LINK  will take you to the article.

SOLD OUT

Again this year we have a sell out for Kentucky Colonels Day on Millionaire's Row.  The November 13 event will be attended by Colonels from 32 States, DC, Canada and Scotland.  If you would like to think ahead, the likely date for the 2011 event will be November 12, 2011.

NOTE for KY, MO and VA Colonels

It is established in Kentucky and we're working on Missouri and Virginia for a Kentucky Colonels License Plate.  Missouri's Legislature will take up our application in January.  We're still in the early stages for Virginia.  Assuming we get MO and VA worked out, those of you there as well as KY residents will need your 2011 membership card to obtain or renew the plate.

Grandma Nettie

St. Joesph's Children's Home is a facility that cares for abused and neglected children, age 6 - 14, who are in state custody.  A wonderful story related to the Home showed up in our email a couple of weeks back.  It was one we happily share.  It was signed simply "Grandma Nettie" The event she refers to was the Kentucky Colonels BBQ.

"A couple of years ago you held an event on the grounds of St Joes Children's home.  A good friend of mine, who is one of your members, invited me to attend.   While there we went on a tour of the home and I met the activities director who mentioned needing someone to teach the kids to crochet.   I told her I would think about it.  Little did I know how this would have such a huge impact.

I started to volunteer teaching the kids to crochet but eventually became "Grandma Nettie" to the children.  I am there almost every Saturday doing arts and crafts, passing out hugs and letting the kids know they matter.  For some of these precious children ... I am the only grandparent they have ever known.

I will continue on with this as long as I am able.  I just thought you should know that this all came about because of your organization.

Thank you."

Grandma Nettie turned out to be Jeanette Melis.  The folks at St. Joe's tell us she has become indispensable in their efforts.  And, we at Headquarters thought, as a result, she has earned a spot on our roster.  She is now Colonel Jeanette Melis.

2010 Grants

On August 30, the Honorable Order's Board of Trustees approved projects from 150 organizations for Good Works Program grants this year.  We'll get a full listing of the projects on the web as soon as possible.  A couple of examples:  Funding for New Eyes for the Needy, a New Jersey non-profit that purchases new eyeglasses for poor children and adults in the United States and recycles donated glasses for distribution to indigent people in developing nations worldwide.  We will also continue funding for the Honor Flight program.  Honor Flight is a national program serving WWII veterans.

It's an official thing!

You may not realize it but an Executive Order from the Governor of Kentucky was required before you received your Kentucky Colonel Commission.  The placement of the state seal on the Commission required action by the Kentucky Secretary of State.  A lot of people think the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels has some direct involvement in the process but we do not.  For complete information on what is involved in the nomination of individuals to be Kentucky Colonels please VISIT THE MOST READ PAGE on our web site.
The Archives

Unfortunately we only have the sales brochure and not an actual "Official Pin" from the very early days of the Honorable Order in our collection.  In addition to the pin you could also purchase from L. G. Balfour Company, "Sole Official Jewelers to Kentucky Colonels", "Official Cuff Links", and an "Official Key".  The 10K "Solid Gold" version of the pin sold for $10.  Those were, by the way, 1930 dollars.
