Eyewitness Reports KY Colonels Day at Churchill Downs (held 11-14-2009)
"The event was truly fantastic! It was the kind of day that
you realize that you are having fun and comment to yourself that you are indeed
having a good time instead of saying a couple of days later that it was fun."
Col. Charles J. (Tug) Roae - Pennsylvania "Marvelous event with great people. I'll be there again next year."Col. Adele Rugg - Hawaii
"The weekend was a REAL WINNER.
I'm all for doing it again next and every year."
Col. Bob Haldi - Tennessee "Thank
You Thank You Thank You! My
family of six had a marvelous time and look forward to next year's event as
well!"Col. Shawnna
Gerding - Missouri
"I really don't think we've experienced such an overall great
day at the track before. The hospitality, decorations, music, food and of
course the weather were second to none. Our out of town family guests added to the festivities. Well, we still can't
pick winning horses, but that is no one's fault but ours."
Col. Michael and
Susan Lyttle - Kentucky

Reindeer?
The horse in the photo is named Blue.
The youngsters shown are children who have a parent currently deployed
in Iraq or Afghanistan. They recently
camped out over night at Life Adventure Center. (LAC). More than 30 families talked about similar
issues, relaxed, made smores around the campfire and applied the paint you see
on Blue. That's part of the learning
experience at Life Adventure Center.
Blue, without doubt the gentlest horse alive, is used as an equine
canvas to teach children the location of various parts and systems of a
horse. Then, as a lesson in caring for
animals, the children get to give Blue a bath.
LAC is located in Kentucky's Bluegrass Region. It bills itself as a hands-on learning farm
teaching children team-work, character and leadership. They work to "inspire children and
re-introduce them to a world without electronics but still endlessly
fascinating". In their application for
a Good Works Program Grant, they wrote "the mall is no place to find
inspiration". Our Board agreed and after close review found the program quite worthy. LAC's request for funding to
purchase 2 reindeer to enhance their program through the winter
months was approved.

Colonel's Corner
Col Art LeMaistre of Calgary,
AB savors some of Kentucky's finest bourbon during the 2009 San Franscisco WhiskeyFest. Note the Colonels' Aide-de-Camp pin just above his jacket pocket. Thanks for sharing Colonel Art.
