From the Winemakers

This year's crush....

It's been an odd year. While the rest of the country (and much of the Northern hemisphere) has been sweltering this summer, we in the east bay and in wine country have been shivering! It has been one of the coldest summers in decades, and it may just end up being a difficult year for winemaking.

If the weather cooperates and gets hot in the next month, and the rains don't come too early, the fruit we (R&B) get should be fine, perhaps not as big a yield as we would like, but we should be harvesting sometime mid October through the beginning of November! Much later than normal!

We, however, may be some of the lucky ones, because some growers in the Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino region have completely lost their fruit this year. This is why:

The summer's cool temperature has kept the fruit from ripening properly throughout the region. In fact, much of the fruit in Napa and Sonoma is as much as a month behind the normal ripening calendar. So, to help speed the ripening process, many vineyards did some drastic canopy management, cutting away much of the leaves to expose the fruit to the sun. At the end of summer, however, we got a huge heat spike. For almost three days it was in the low 100s, after barely getting above 85 degrees for much of the summer. Pure and simple, the fruit got sunburned.

What happens when the fruit gets burned? The little stem (called the"rachis") that attaches the grape to the rest of the plant burns out and dies. When that happens the grapes have no way of getting nutrients from the plant. From that point on, it simply stops maturing . While the fruit may look great, it is a long way from being ripe enough to harvest for winemaking purposes. At least, not wine that you and I would want to drink. Simply put, for those people, the year's harvest is a loss.

Luckily, we did not do any drastic pruning. We did, however, drop more fruit than usual in order for the remaining fruit to become more intense and ready for harvest. Obviously it means we will have a smaller yield, but if the wine gods (Dionysus and his pals) are smiling on us, the fruit we do harvest should be good. Cross your fingers, say a prayer, because the jury's out until harvest day!

R&B Cellars Pizzicato
Petite Sirah

Available NOW!

Meet the newest member of R&B's family of wines:
R&B Cellars Pizzicato Petite Sirah.

Winemaker's notes: "This Petite Sirah is dark, powerfully flavored, and intense. An explosion of flavors with hints of blueberry, black currant, and dark plum tones matches beautifully with the French oak that adds notes of chocolate and exotic spice. As the name Pizzicato denotes, this wine has lots of "pluck" so you better be ready for some serious wine. In matching with food, big flavors only need apply!"

Rib-Eye Steaks in Red-Wine Sauce

BBQ Ribs

Our Pizzicato Petite Sirah is a deep, bold vintage.

With BBQ season ending soon, we thought this recipe with the flavorful Rib-Eye steak, would be a perfect recipe pairing before fall sets in.

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:
4 (1/2-inch-thick) boneless rib-eye steaks (2 pounds total)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
3/4 cup R&B 2008 Pizzicato Petite Sirah
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 3 pieces
1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley

Procedure:

Pat steaks dry, then sprinkle with 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper (total).

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over high heat until it shimmers, then saut steaks in 2 batches, turning once, about 4 minutes per batch for medium-rare. Transfer to a large plate and cover with foil.

Pour off fat from skillet, then saut garlic in remaining tablespoon oil over medium-high heat until pale golden, about 30 seconds. Add wine and boil, stirring and scraping up brown bits, until reduced by half, 2 to 3 minutes. Add water, soy sauce, and any meat juices from plate and boil until reduced by half, 3 to 4 minutes.

Reduce heat to medium-low and whisk in butter, 1 piece at a time, until slightly thickened. Stir in parsley and pour sauce over steaks.

There was something for everyone at July's Crush Barrel Wine Market, from bubbly bruts to earthy Bordeaux blends. The event was set at Fort Mason, in San Francisco, where wine enthusiasts could try and buy, directly from the winery. Here are the top 4 picks of the market:

...

R&B Cellars Fortissimo "Port" Desert Wine - A beautiful wine to finish off the wine tasting. I coupled this with a few chocolates from different tables to really get this port to shine. Tobacco, leather and plum can easily be found in this wine. It's thick and leathery; simply beautiful.
