Gersh Student Brandon R. delivered the following speech
during our Open House at Coral
Rock Academy.
"Hi my name is Brandon. I am 12-almost 13. I'm in 7th
grade. My diagnoses are depression and vocal ticks (making noises). Coral Rock Academy has helped me a lot. There
are lots of things I like about the school. For starters, the teachers
are nice. They act more like friends than teachers. When I'm upset
or mad they always cheer me up. There are lots of teachers so if I need help on
math or reading I get the help and don't need to wait forever. Another
thing I like is the students. The school teaches us to respect each
other. Most of us play together on the play ground or in the
classroom. The school teaches us to compromise about our problems instead
of fighting. Some of the kids hang out on the weekends. The best
part is they accept everyone for who they are. Coral Rock has helped me a lot
personally. They have taught me to not get upset. In the beginning
of the school year I started to get vocal tics. The teachers still tried
to understand what I was doing and were really caring about it. The
school has helped me a lot from where I was when I first started. I know
that they would do the same for you. They have helped me set goals for
myself and are still helping me to find ways to help me at home and in
public. That's why I love this school so much."

Gersh Academy, Hauppauge Campus on Film
|
|
The New Year has begun,
and the staff and students at Gersh
Academy in Hauppauge, NY are
planning an exciting new project for our Film Appreciation & Creation
class. Building on what they have
learned in the first half of the course, the students are all set to begin work
on a series of short films designed to educate, entertain, and enlighten. This
series of short films will be known collectively as "Social Stories".Each
individual film will focus on a specific social skill. Some of the social skills we hope to explore
include learning to compromise, how to be a "good winner", and learning to
empathize with others. The staff and
students will collaborate on the scripts for each film and develop dramatic and
comedic situations to illustrate the importance of each social skill. We at Gersh Academy
in Hauppauge believe that these films will not only provide our students with
an opportunity to develop and build upon their own social skills, but will provide
examples of appropriate social behavior that other students can learn
from. Lights, camera, action!

Glen Oaks Takes lessons in Shopping.
|
|
This holiday season, the students of Gersh Academy at Glen Oaks experienced the joy of giving. As part of their
transitional program each student traveled to one of Long Islands
numerous shopping malls and had the chance to employ their money management and
comparative shopping skills by purchasing a holiday gift for a member of their
family. The students were given a fixed
budget and challenged to find a gift that fit within it. Upon purchasing the gifts, the students
returned to school where they received step by step instructions on the art of
wrapping a present. These activities not
only helped our students brighten a family member's holiday but afforded them
the opportunity to develop skills that they will use for a lifetime.

Hittin' the Workplace
written by Gersh student Vida Heathcote
|
|
Recently some of us Gershers have entered the "working world". Galen Lowell, Ben Susser, Aaron Gershon and I (Vida Heathcote) have obtained employment. Galen and Ben have been hired at the infamous Pane's Restaurant in North Tonawanda. Aaron was hired at BJ's Wholesale Club and I was hired at Daemen College as a work-study at the office of Residence Life. Everyone, so far, has had a great time, which is not only intrinsically and extrinsically satisfying, but we have also had a few lessons in life! |
Promoting Literacy at West Hills Montessori |
|
|
One of the key components of an Education for Life is establishing
and maintaining a love of books and reading. Children at West Hills Montessori
enjoy a learning environment enriched with an accelerated Language Arts
curriculum. From our youngest 18 month old toddlers through our 12 year old
sixth grade students, children are encouraged to read and discuss (verbally and
in writing) a broad range of literary genres every day. At the first through
third grade level this includes visiting the Kindergarten and Pre-School
classes every week to read aloud to the younger children. What a wonderful way
to encourage self esteem, community building and strong reading skills!
