EDUCATION FOR LIFE at West Hills Montessori
December brings many opportunities for
children to learn and practice peace building activities. Positive peace
education is a major component of The Montessori philosophy.
Peace building activities our children ha ve experienced include:
*Exploration of different cultures and religious traditions
to reveal the many similarities that exist for all peoples.
*Community Building: Class meetings which
develop collaborative solutions to issues arising on the playground. *Constructive Social Action (following the development of awareness
of community issues outside of school.) This month the children of West Hills Montessori
collected non-perishable food for a local food pantry and donated holiday gifts
for pre-school children attending LI Head Start.
Our 4th through 6th Grade students
were proud to deliver these gifts in person to the building principal at LI Head Start.
At West Hills Montessori we are laying the foundation for
children to become successful world citizens.
"The Child is both a hope and a
promise for mankind"

Queens Kids go Behind the Scenes at Gersh.

Ms. Scott's B.A.S.E. Middle School class at Glen Oaks recently took a trip to Gersh Academy's
Administrative Offices in Melville. The students learned first hand about "office" jobs that they
had been learning about in class. The students sat down with a representative from each Administrative Department including: Marketing, Human Resources, Accounting, Information Technologies, and the Education Department. The students really enjoyed learning about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into operating their school. They all had plenty of questions and brought lots of joy to the staff at our Melville office. |
Photographer Stephen Frink shows students what it takes to Swim with the Sharks!

|
On our trip to
Key Largo to go snorkeling, we were fortunate
enough to visit with Stephen Frink, world famous underwater photographer and
long time friend. The students had an opportunity to chat with Mr. Frink about
the different places he has explored, things he has photographed and how he
decided to become a photographer. It was a great experience for all. |
Hauppauge Celebrates the Holidays
|
|
The
students of Gersh
Academy in Hauppauge are still glowing from the success of their annual Holiday Show. The 2009
Holiday Show featured a variety of performances involving the entire
student body, as well as select members of the staff. The students of Gersh Academy
put their voices to the test with their own spin on a collection of
holiday favorites, performed a comedic one-act play, and showcased some of the short
films they have produced in Film Appreciation & Creation. The students worked extra hard to memorize their lines,
perfect their pitch, and practice their stagecraft to give the audience the
best show possible. Needless to say, the
2009 Holiday Show was a festive and entertaining send-off before the
upcoming Winter Recess.

I had heard of Sarah Vowell before Mrs. Murphy mentioned that she would be speaking at Medaille, but all I knew was that she was a historian. I thought I would go, because I didn't have anything else to do that night and I thought I might learn a few things. Before I went I was thinking "historian-dry lecture," but with Sarah Vowell it was anything but dry. She's funny and a little bit crazy. Her thinking processes can be a little out of the ordinary or, as Mrs. Murphy would say, random, kind of like mine. Without having read any of her work, I can tell that it would be much more to my taste than the majority of works that are in the historical genre, because she makes history so much fun and realistic. | |
