A VERY Special THANK YOU
to... |
|

Gersh Academy's Transitional Program gives our high school students enrolled in the I Am I Can program the opportunity to visit local businesses and learn about different careers.
On October 20, 2009 Petland Discounts Corporate Headquarters in Brentwood, N.Y. opened their doors to our Gersh Academy Students.
Our students toured the facilities and were shown the kind of work that goes into running a successful receiving, tracking, and distribution center.
Following the warehouse tour the students were given the opportunity to visit the "live stock" warehouse where they learned about the importance of proper pet care.
A VERY special thank you to Petland Discounts and their Public Relations Director Ms. Amy Kimmel. Our students loved learning about this well respected company and many of them walked away wanting to know more about potential careers in the pet industry.

The 2009 School Year is well under way here at Gersh Academy High School in Hauppauge, and our students are off to a great start.
One of our more creative students, Alissa, has used the first quarter to take advantage of our Film Appreciation & Creation program.
Alissa has already been filmed performing a monologue from the 1995 film "Clueless," helped shoot and score a short film called "The Greatest Basketball Player Ever," and assisted in editing both films using Windows Movie Maker. She has also penned a script titled "It Came from the Planet Claire," an incredibly funny and imaginative space fantasy in which Alissa and our students plan to film over the weeks ahead.
The entire staff and student body of Gersh Academy High School look forward to filming her script, and we anticipate a year enriched by Alissa's creative output.
This Student Spotlight applauds Alissa's hard work, her enthusiasm, and her incredibly productive imagination.

Queens Kids Picked out of the Big City and Planted on Schmitt's Farm. |
|
Last month in preparation for Halloween, the BASE high school students of Glen Oaks had a unique opportunity to participate in a behind-the-scenes tour of one of Long Island's premiere family farms. The experience kicked off with the students enjoying a re laxing hayride around the farm property. From there the students made their way to the main pumpkin field where one of Schmitt Farms friendly and knowledgeable staff members provided the class with an in depth presentation. The staff member described the months of planning and preparation it takes for the farm to plant and grow not only the pumpkins, but the wide variety of vegetables it sells during the holiday season. The tour concluded with the students picking out pumpkins to bring back to school to carve an assortment of vegetables for cooking activities.

Touchdown for our Coral Rock students! |
|
Several of our Coral Rock High School students participated in a local event hosted by the NFL and United Way "Hometown Huddle". The students had a chance to meet and interact with Miami Dolphin players, obtain autographs, join a workout and learn the importance of physical fitness. The event was hosted at the "bubble", a Miami Dolphins training facility. Our students were THRILLED at this opportunity to learn from some of Miami's shining stars. They didn't mind spending time with the cheerleaders either! |
NOW WE'RE COOKING!
written by Vida Heathcote
Student at the Gersh Experience |

If there is one person that everyone loves at The Gersh Experience, it is Marion Berchard, aka 'Mary the Cook'. Mary first started out with Gersh in Fall 2008, where she cooked for seventeen starving college students. Mary not only cooks for us, but is the "Gersh Mommy". Whether its giving Ben advice on why he should not get upset with everyone or she is picking tomatoes out of my salad, she will always be there for you. She not only works for the Gersh Experience but, she works at Daemen's infamous Cyber Café. She will learn your name by the second day you walk into Cyber Café and will know that you like a tuna melt with a Diet Dr. Pepper, and cheddar fries (that is my usual dish). If there is one name that will make me smile during the day no matter what my mood is, it is 'Mary the Cook'. |
Fall into Autumn with West Hills Montessori
|
|

November at West Hills Montessori is a time for teaching tradition and learning about community building . Our families, students and staff of WHM have been working to help feed those in need in our community. The children at West Hills Montessori have been busy preparing a feast very much like the Pilgrims did at the very first Thanksgiving.
Every class has prepared a dish to be shared by all at our school
wide Thanksgiving feast. The children have washed, cored, sliced and dried
apples, baked an assortment of breads reflecting the bounty of the season, cut
out turkey rings and made Turkey-on-a-Ritz, cooked cranberries in class, made yummy relish, and peeled, chopped, cooked and stirred apples for a applesauce. The Parent Association is
contributing box juice and warm corn on the cob and helping set up the feast
for the children. The Kindergarten and Elementary children are also sharing a
gift of music with all of their friends.
The families and staff of West Hills Montessori have also
been contributing non-perishable food items to help feed needy families of Long Island through the Interfaith Nutrition Network and
the Patchogue Soup Kitchen.
