James Maffucci
James enjoying a Gersh Academy Summer Program field trip

"Gersh is unlike any other program I have looked at.  Most programs seem to be either strict ABA, or mainly floor-time and sensory; or programs lean heavily toward either academics or life skills.  What we love about Gersh is that it offers James the widest possible array of services.  At first, he was in the "I Am I Can" program, but as he was ready to enter the eighth grade, it was decided by us all that the Regents track would be too difficult for him, and he is now in the B.A.S.E. program.

James loves to go to school, and since being at Gersh, he has made great progress in two areas that gave us much worry:  handling his anxiety (because he can't learn if he is constantly afraid), and enjoying his peers (he has always warmed up more quickly with adults).  James has become much more confident and feels valued and appreciated by his teachers at Gersh and by his friends."

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

StudentSpotlight
Arun ShettyOn May 21, 2009, Arun graduated from The Gersh Experience after two years of hard work, perseverance and personal growth.   He will forever hold the honor of being the very first student to graduate from this post secondary program that supports young men and women with disabilities as they attend college and learn the skills they will need to function successfully in the adult world.  He is also the first international student, having traveled from London, England to attend.

HAUPPAUGEGersh Academy in Hauppauge hits a home run with their Summer Program!
The Summer Program at the Hauppauge campus has been full of exciting trips and special days.  The students and staff have undertaken several trips, such as those to the Museum of the Moving Image and the Tri-County Flea West Hills Day CampMarket. We have had lunch at Cheeburger Cheeburger, spent Friday mornings preparing a variety of international dishes, and made marshmallow s'mores as part of our evening of camping on campus.

One trip in particular which stands out in the minds of our staff and students was our July trip to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in New York City.  This trip provided our students with an opportunity to see the President of the United States, take pictures with famous historical figures, and mingle with celebrities...or at least, their wax representatives! At the same time, our students learned to navigate New York City's public transportation system, and in doing so gained an important life skill.  Altogether, this was an educational and entertaining trip which illustrates what makes the Summer Program at Hauppauge so special.
CORALROCKLights, Camera and lots of Action at Gersh Academy in Miami.
Coral Rock Academy is excited to welcome the start of a new school year on August 24th. We have missed the students and are eager to hear about their summer adventures.

Several exciting clubs were initiated this summer, stemming from student ideas and will be implemented this school year. We will begin with a photography afterschool club where the students will learn and develop skills on composition, lighting, equipment use, color and design. They will explore different techniques and document their school year.

Our second afterschool activity will be a community service club that will focus on different projects throughout the school year that promote caring and making a difference. Some of the student ideas include Habitat for Humanity, sending used books and school supplies to an identified school in Central America, and supporting/ adopting a U.S. troop with student letters and student generated ideas.

Our goal is to provide experiences and unique opportunities that increase awareness and build leadership skills. We will keep you posted on our success and any opportunities for parents to participate in.

GLENOAKSGlen Oaks students find big lessons come from little creatures.
This summer, the students at Glen Oaks worked on
developing a more comprehensive understanding of the many different animals that inhabit our planet.  During the course of the six week program, the students had the opportunity to visit numerous zoos and animal parks where they spent their days getting an up close look at creatures of all shapes and sizes.  By combining informative tours with hands on encounters, each student was able to walk away with increased knowledge and more respect for the animal kingdom.
WHMWest Hills Montessori takes a journey on the tribal trail.
At West Hills Montessori we are all looking forward to the start of our 20th year of providing an outstanding Montessori program to children from our youngest toddlers (18 month olds) through the sixth grade. Throughout the school year our Parent Association helps bring cultural and enrichment Programs to enhance the Montessori curriculum. Our entire school is looking forward to the "Journey's Eastern Woodlands Program" scheduled for Monday, September 21, 2009.  Hands-on activities capture children's attention and imagination, providing a learning experience they will never forget. The program includes a moving museum of material culture including clothing, beadwork, porcupine quillwork, containers, wampum, dolls, drums, and much more!
