New Academic Program Guide Unveiled! Academic Program Guide

Introducing our new four-night program, Stories in the Scrub, and three half-day immersion programs in our themed camping areas: Astronomy and Science, Mining, and Ranch.

Stories in the Scrub
Stories in the Scrub, our exciting, four-night resident camp, is comprised of days in the foothills where students experience physical, earth and life science principles through hands-on lessons, outdoor activities and team building games. Stories in the Scrub is rich in content and addresses over 100 California State Standards. Resident programs include delicious meals prepared by Hector, our Executive Chef, and lodging is in our new bunkhouses.

Half-Day Immersion Programs
  • Mad Scientist: Experience out-of-this-world wonders at the Astronomy and Science Camp. The Mad Scientist program focuses on physical science concepts. Students examine rockets and use atmospheric pressure to implode soda cans.
  • Adventure in Blackstar Mine: Adventure in Blackstar Mine takes place in the Mining Camp and includes an emphasis on Gold Rush history and earth sciences. Students climb down into the Lucy-Lou Mine to learn about earthquakes, plate tectonics, fossil fuels, mining, rocks and minerals in a fun, hands-on fashion.
  • Day on the Rancho: Day on the Rancho includes an emphasis on California early settler history and life science concepts. Students explore the citrus grove, vegetable garden, visit our windmill and solar powered well and learn about soil, compost, plant anatomy, photosynthesis, pollination, pests and the water cycle.

H2O AWaterlert!
Don't you love the spring? The weather gets beautiful and there's nothing better than throwing on a pair of running shoes and getting some exercise outdoors. The only thing you need to remember is that temperatures are warmer than winter's but still relatively cool. So it's easy to forget a very serious exercise-induced concern: Dehydration. Recent research shows that exercisers can actually lose more water in colder, spring-like weather than at any other time of the year. So, grab your tennies, a bottle of water, get outdoors and have some fun.
Volunteers Needed
We are looking for volunteers to support educational programming at The Ranch. The right volunteer will support the educational experience of students by delivering lesson plans in cooperation with our Program Coordinators. We seek expertise in life, physical and earth science concepts.

Opportunities are available between 8 am and 4 pm. Schedules are flexible. We provide training and support to make each experience an enjoyable time.

We also have volunteer positions available for high school seniors and college students interested in receiving community service hours.

Email Joan Horton, Executive Director, for more information.

Wild Hyacinth in Bloom at The Ranch                   Wild Hyacinth, a favorite wildflower of many hikers, blooms in spring and summer months. The corm, also known as the underground stem of this flower, has been gathered by Native Americans in California for centuries and is an important starch in their diet. Corms are also eaten by animals such as black bears, mule deer, non-native wild pigs, rabbits and pocket gophers. Don't miss these beautiful flowers in bloom. Make your reservation today.
