January 2009 - A New Year is upon us!

Well, it is time to get back into the swing of things, set goals and make plans now that the holiday season is over. Although January is a month that often means looking forward, for the Team at Human Motion, this January we are looking back on 2008 and the lives we were a part of, the successes we shared and the laughs we all had. We are looking back now, in memory of Simon Chow, one of our dearest clients who died tragically of a heart attack on December 19, 2008.

We feel very fortunate to have been a part of Simon's life and athletic career. Simon was featured as our athlete of the month, in November for his colourful sporting history and more importantly, his love of training and competition. Simon was a special athlete - a real student of every game he played. His training and his life motto was: "How bad could it be?" Simon's positive, get down to work, attitude was contagious. He will be missed by the Team as he trained with all of us.

In lieu of flowers, Simon's wife, Linda has requested a donation be made to: BC Junior Squash Program c/o Catherine Huang. Address: 2789 East 44th Avenue, Vancouver, V5R 3A5.

Good Foods...Bad Foods...

So much nutritional information we receive is based around avoiding 'bad foods' and eating more 'good foods'. And whilst there certainly are foods that we over consume and conversely nutrients that we under consume, the biggest problem with our diet in the modern world is one of balance.

Active Release Techniques (ART®)
By Dr. Jenn Turner

You have seen the tents at many sporting events, you have at least one training partner that raves about it and you have heard of Olympic athletes using it. It is ART®, but what is ART® doing in a sporting context? Well it's actually an innovative, soft tissue treatment called Active Release Technique or A.R.T. for short. ART® is a patented technique developed in the 1980's by chiropractor and aeronautical engineer Dr. Michael P. Leahy. This unique treatment has significant role in the recovery of both athletic and occupational injuries. Let's back up a step and explain the type of muscle damage us as triathletes often incur.
