Zero Graffiti for a Beautiful City
Zero Graffiti Newsletter   Volume 7 June 2011
Dear Friends,

Encouraging news from a recent San Francisco perception study report: In a nutshell, folks are pleased with how the streets and sidewalks look. Results of the study show that pedestrians "do not express high levels of dissatisfaction with the presence of graffiti" in City locations that do not meet the 100% graffiti-free standard. This means to me that we must remain vigilant and keep up the important work of reporting graffiti vandalism and abating it quickly.

Staying connected with your community is vital. One way to stay on top of the graffiti issues in SF is to take advantage of the many easy ways to report graffiti to 311. You can get graffiti related updates via Twitter at http://twitter.com/zerograffitisf, or you can follow me too at http://twitter.com/MrCleanSF.

Take a minute to look through some graffiti-related updates below, and please forward the Zero Graffiti Pledge to friends and residents who may be interested. The Pledge is a great way to renew a commitment to the cause of keeping this great city beautiful and livable.

Thank you,
Mohammed Nuru

On Friday, May 20th, the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Department of Public Works teamed up with the San Francisco 49ers' Pro Bowl tight-end Vernon Davis to collaborate on a StreetSmARTs mural and present a student art scholarship.

That evening, Davis presented a $15,000 check to this year's Vernon Davis Visual Arts Scholarship recipient, an art student from Lowell High School, at the San Francisco Unified School District's "Young At Art" Gala.

Before that, Davis met up with StreetSmARTs artist Cameron Moberg and some students to help out with the newest mural. Read the SF Gate article "49er Vernon Davis shows kids his artwork".

The recently completed mural is on Jones Street at Turk in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Twenty new murals from the graffiti-vandalism prevention program "StreetSmARTs" are scheduled to be completed by the end of June.

MTA presents "Impacts of Graffiti"

MTA GraffitiThe San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency presented last month to its MTA Board a report that covered the "Impact of Graffiti on Transit Services". Over $12.5 million a year is spent abating graffiti from transit vehicles like MUNI buses, trains, and cable cars. And taking into account other MTA run property like signs, the cost is much closer to $17 million.

The insightful presentation provided an overview of the types of transit property that are vandalized, the infrastructure in place to abate, partnerships with the SFPD to catch and prosecute vandals, and recommendations moving forward. Please take the time to look through the presentation. Hats off to the good folks at the MTA for working so hard to stay on top of this.
