Zero Graffiti Newsletter   Volume 3 August 2010
Dear friends,

I am proud to announce that during this past year we have made significant strides in the fight against urban blight. The hugely successful StreetSmARTs program is moving into its second year with the goal of creating 20 new murals. Our Clean and Green Trucks program painted out over a dozen graffitied vehicles. And now more than 2,100 people who have signed the Zero Graffiti Pledge and are a part of the movement against vandalism and tagging in San Francisco.

It is our mission to build on these successes and continue on the path of keeping San Francisco beautiful by fighting graffiti vandalism in new and innovative ways. Thank you for being a participant in this movement.

Forward the Pledge to your neighbors to help make your community safer, cleaner and more livable. And finally, please continue to report graffiti through 3-1-1 and remove graffiti from your property as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Mohammed Nuru

Graffiti Advertising on Sidewalks
Sidewalk TagDuring the month of July, DPW put a stop to and cleaned several sidewalk tags by a marketing company for Havaianas Sandals. Vigilant San Francisco residents and DPW staffers identified over 75 sidewalk tags in the form of chalk painted stencils in front of businesses and homes.

DPW put a call out to Graffiti Watch members and the Graffiti Advisory Board for sightings and received dozens of emails with images of the tags. DPW abated the tags right away, and notified the marketing company who agreed to halt all tags in San Francisco and in all cities around the country. Thank you to everyone who emailed reports.

There have been reports of other types of sidewalk advertising around the City. If you see tagging or vandalism of any type, please report to 3-1-1 immediately.

Clean and Green Trucks a Success!

The Clean and Green Trucks Program has successfully painted out its target number of vehicles for the initial round as a pilot program. DPW and the City's Central Shops will paint the 14th truck in August, just over five months after Mayor Newsom announced the program at a press conference in Chinatown.

So far, none of the trucks have reported new vandalism, and each vehicle owner is very happy about the service and professional paint job they recieved. The City painted each tagged up and vandalized truck at absolutely no cost to the owners. All we asked is that they keep it graffiti free for at least a year. Check out some select photos of trucks that have been painted.

The need is still out there, so if you see a tagged up truck parked on the street, refer them to the Clean and Green Trucks Program. Have the owners call 3-1-1. This program was made possible by the Community Challenge Grant Program.

StreetSmARTs Earns Praise, Expands Program

The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and DPW have been partnering to connect established street muralists with San Francisco private property owners to create beautful neighborhood murals and deter the reoccurance of tagging and vandalism in neighborhoods across the City. The StreetSmARTs program recently earned national press in the Wall Street Journal that touts the program that fights rampant vandalism. Read the about it: A New Blueprint for Tackling Graffiti.

The program created ten murals during the its pilot year, and this year StreetSmARTs plans to double that number and expand the program to reach more property owners and muralists.

This and other anti-vandalism programs received mention in this SF Public Press Article: City's struggle against graffiti tries rewards, murals and profiling. Thanks to the SFAC for their hard work and passionate leadership in making this program such a great success.
