A Special Message from the Executive Director

Donna J. ByrneCelebrate Women's Equality Day - August 26!

In 1848, the first women's rights meeting in the United States was held at Seneca Falls, New York, began a movement that would continue on for more than 70 years before one of its most pivotal milestones was reached. On August 26, 1920 women were finally given the right to vote. Since 1971, August 26 has been recognized as Women's Equality Day. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the Presidential Proclamation from August 26, 2008.

"With vision and determination, American women have helped build our great Nation. On Women's Equality Day, we remember the dedication of women who overcame many obstacles in order to secure the right to vote.
The struggle for women's rights is a story of strong women willing to take the lead and pave the way toward equal voting rights for all American citizens. In 1848, a group of determined women came together in Seneca Falls, New York, to proclaim that "all men and women are created equal," and demand suffrage. Alison's Story

Late one afternoon, Alison* walked into the Legal Advocacy office at A Woman's Place (AWP). She had fled her home and needed assistance in filing for a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) and guidance on enhancing her safety and the safety of her children who she had been forced to leave when she fled. With AWP's assistance, Alison was awarded a temporary order and custody of her two children. AWP called on the local police department to help in serving the temporary PFA and retrieve the children from Alison's abuser. Years of outreach, relationship building, and collaboration with police departments paid off and the response and support from the police department was overwhelming and Alison was able to be reunited with her children and start her journey toward building a healthier and safer life for her family.

Thanks to you, AWP was able to help Alison, her children, and others like them who are not safe in their homes. AWP provides services to over 3,000 victims of domestic violence each year, and touches over 25,000 lives through education and outreach programs the provide individuals in need with vital information. You made that possible and AWP thanks you. As the challenges of the current economy swirl around all of us, AWP remains committed to ensuring that the help needed remains uninterrupted. Now more than ever, the services and programs of AWP are a vital community resource. Thank you for all you have done, and thank you in advance for your continued support. You can make a gift, of any size, by clicking here. Alison thanks you. Her children thank you. AWP thanks you.
