| Greetings!
An Important Way to Get Involved! by Jim Smith When I first accepted this new job the Board told me that a large part of it would be in the Legislative Affairs arena. I didn't fully understand that then - BUT I SURE DO NOW! And I have learned that I can sure use your help! I am amazed at the level of the Chamber's involvement in the legislative process, from changing ordinances in a city to weighing in with our State Legislators on key issues. We have taken steps this year to move our game to the next level by becoming more PROACTIVE and less REACTIVE in the process. For example, under the direction of Kori Ann Edwards, our Legislative Affairs Committee Chair this year, we are rewriting our Davis Chamber Public Policy document and preparing early to be able to take an official position on various key issues. Included on that list as of now are immigration, energy, waste management, restaurant taxes, public education funding, Economic Development, transportation, healthcare reform, and tourism. We have assigned sub-committees to each of these areas and are researching the pro and con of each. If we are going to take an official position as a Chamber on any of these topics we want to be informed so that we can make an educated stand. Here is what you can do to help me - I need more folks involved in the Legislative Affairs Committee! Particularly I need more of our business people involved! We have some very active Chamber members from the public sector who add immensely to our committee - but I want to make sure we have good representation from the business community as well. Don't forget this is a Chamber of COMMERCE, or business! Come join us. Legislative Affairs Committee costs $250 per year (which mostly goes to pay for your breakfast all year) and that is prorated to $125 for the rest of 2010. Come learn both sides of issues and then help form the Chamber's position statement. We want the kind of people who are open to learning new ideas and being respectful of opposing viewpoints. The goal is to come together as a legislative coalition, not divide ourselves over differences of opinion. |

The Wasatch Front Regional Council will sponsor two open houses to display and receive comment on the Draft 2011-2016 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Some of the projects added to the draft TIP include a transit oriented development in Sandy, an extension of 6200 South in West Valley City, reconstruction of Adams Avenue in Washington Terrace, reconstruction of 200 North in Kaysville, completion of park and ride lots in Tooele and Cottonwood Heights, additional vans for the UTA van pool program, intersection improvements to 6200 South and Holladay Boulevard in Holladay City and along 500 South in Bountiful.
All these projects are subject to public comment prior to consideration and possible adoption by the Regional Council. The requisite comment period began on July 3, 2010 and will run through August 7, 2010.
As part of the comment period, the Regional Council will sponsor two open houses to display and receive comment on the Draft TIPand associated air quality conformity findings on:

Please come and see how this program of highway and transit projects will affect you.
Clear the Air Challenge
The 2010 Clear the Air Challenge is about to start, and we need your participation. The UDOT TravelWise program has once again partnered with Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Solutions and others to put on the Challenge in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, reduce energy consumption and improve air quality.
Once you join, you simply log in and use the TravelWise Tracker to log the trips you save by using TravelWise strategies including carpooling/vanpooling, walking and biking, taking transit, compressed workweeks, etc. The Tracker shows you how your trips measure up in terms of energy, emissions and money saved. Your participation could even win you some great prizes.
Please take a minute to sign up for the Challenge, which runs July 1-31. You can participate as an individual, or join or create a team. If you participated last year, you already have a login. If you're new to the Challenge this year, signing up is easy.
Go to www.cleartheairchallenge.org to learn more and to sign up for the Challenge.
