A Chamber Program for the Best and Brightest

By Jim Smith

It is time for me to tell you about one of the Chamber's best program offerings-our
Leadership Institute program!  We just had the graduation ceremony for the
2009-2010 class at the Hill AFB Museum last month.  Now we are preparing for our
2010-2011 class which kicks off in September.

"What is Leadership Institute?" you ask.  It is an educational/training program aimed
at the best and brightest folks in your company and provides them with a SUPERIOR
experience in leadership training.  You will want to consider Leadership Institute for those
in your company who are poised to have the biggest impact in the future.

The class meets once a month from September 2010 to May 2011.  It is generally an
ALL-DAY SESSION and each one is packed with hands-on experience that they can
bring back to work every day.  One day is focused on efficiency and is held at HAFB
with nationally recognized teachers.  One day is focused on local community issues
and is held at the Davis County Correctional Facility.  We spend another day on
c
urrent leadership trends, held at Davis Hospital.  We spend a day on Capitol Hill
during the legislative session.  Other topics include tourism, marketing, strategic
planning, project management,
and more.

One of my favorite parts of the program is having each participant practice their
public communication skills on each other during the year, followed by a service
project where they provide a 360 degree review of a local not-for-profit organization
and give them a detailed business plan, entirely designed by the class participants.

The cost of this year-long program is $695 per student, which is significantly lower

than our neighboring Chambers.  In many ways it is the equivalent of what I experienced
at grad school!  Our organizing committee is one of the best, most dedicated in the
Chamber and the curriculum has been honed over the years to focus on what matters most.
re the person who would benefit from this type of experience, let your boss know you
want to be part of the Leadership Institute 2010-2011 class.  If he/she needs any further inputl
let me know and I will call them.  They will see that this is the kind of personnel investment
that pays HUGE DIVIDENDS for years to come.
Let us know if you are interested in being considered
for this year's class.  We already have
four signed up before we even advertised.  We need to
get up to 24 for me to consider the
class "full".

·         Agenda - The governor will address topics he feels are vital to our state and to Davis County.  Following his remarks we will have a Q&A segment.  Because this is sponsored by the Davis Chamber we want our questions to focus on business - so our designated topics will be Economic Development and Transportation.
·         NOTE: Even though this is an election year, Governor Herbert made it clear that he is coming to address us as GOVERNOR and not as a CANDIDATE.  Please respect that and keep questions focused on the business topics above.  Later in the year we will sponsor a "Meet the Candidates Night" at which time we can address political issues with the candidates.
PLEASE RSVP NOW!  Time is very short and we need to make a lot of arrangements in a short period of time.  My hope is to have about 200 people in attendance but I need to know quickly.  Contact us by Friday, June 18th with your RSVP at 801 593 2200 or by email at  daviscc@davischamberofcommerce.com.
