Strategic Planning
Opportunity for Alliance Organizations
|
Is your organization struggling due to lack
of a compelling or widely held vision? Are you looking for ways to increase
your volunteers or membership? Are you looking to diversify your membership or to
engage new audiences in your work? Are you looking to revisit your current strategy
and build a more inclusive and engaged membership?
If you answered "Yes" to any of the above
questions, then stay tuned for how you could work with the Alliance to host a
strategic planning summit for your organization in 2010.
Thanks to the generous support of New Belgium
Brewing Company, the Alliance will be accepting applications next month from
organizations interested in working with us to develop a strategic plan. In
2009, Alliance staff worked with two organizations to develop strategic plans as
part of a pilot project. Now funding from New Belgium Brewing Company will help
offset the cost to selected organizations this year.
More details on the application process will
follow in the next edition of Streetside. For more information on the Whole
Systems Strategic Planning approach used by the Alliance check out the video
"Mead Summit" found under the Strategic Planning section of the Online Resources
Library.

Alliance Members Get Discounted Registration to National Bike Summit
|
 If you plan
to attend the 2010 National Bike Summit your Alliance membership will save you $80 off the regular registration
cost. The National Bike Summit, hosted by the League of American Bicyclists, is an annual conference that brings together bicycle advocates and
professionals from across the U.S. to further their knowledge of the issues,
network, and make an impact in federal transportation policy. According to the
League, "At past Summits, we have established the Senate Bike Caucus and
encouraged more than 200 House members to join the Congressional Bike Caucus. We
have visited more than 350 House offices and more than 90 Senate offices
annually, and introduced laws such as the Bicycle Commuter Act.
In 2010, Congress and our Federal
agencies will be setting national targets and goals for 2020. They will be
writing transportation, climate, health care, natural resources and other
critical pieces of legislation that will shape our future. Bicycling must be
prominently featured in these important pieces of legislation, documents,
funding streams and programs.
Ten years ago, the first National Bike Summit brought just over 100
advocates and industry leaders to Washington, D.C. - this year we need to be
closer to 1,000 participants to make a strong impact. Join us and speak up for bicycling; discover how your voice can truly be
heard."
Alliance members who register receive the League member discount of
$80 off the regular rate. Register by February 4th
to receive the early registration rate. Be sure to indicate you are an Alliance
member with your registration in order to receive the discount.

Thank You
Jessica
|
This past fall, the Alliance hosted Jessica
Weber as Member Services Intern. Jessica brought a wealth of knowledge and
experience to the Alliance and talked with many of you during her time with us.
Her upbeat attitude, organizational skills, and willingness to tackle various
projects around our office were an inspiration to all. In addition to helping
with database development, member outreach, and training coordination, Jessica
also attended the Richmond Winning Campaigns Training where she reported being
inspired by the work Alliance leaders are doing in their communities.
Upon her return to complete a master's degree
at West Virginia University, she hopes to assist Positive Spin, an Alliance
organization, in growing their capacity. The Alliance is very grateful for all
of Jessica's contributions and wishes her the best in her next endeavors.

SFBC Welcomes First Bike Lane in 3 Years!
|
After the San Francisco
Superior Court was exposed to a city report stating that bicycle ridership has
increased 53% since 2006, the court ruled to partially lift the Bike Plan
injunction set three years ago. Since the ruling, the San Francisco Bicycle

that the city is taking full advantage of the court's partial lift. Just days
following the lift, SFBC welcomed the city's first bike lane in three years
along with its first green-colored "Bike Box."
