Thank/Spank Your Congress Member
Thursday, September 17, 2009

Dear ,

Thanks for your help, and for mobilizing so quickly.  The Coburn Amendment 2371 was defeated in the senate this morning in a 39-59 vote

Thank you for your help sending alerts, calling your senators, and sending in Transportation Enhancement projects.  Senator Boxer used some of these examples when she spoke out against the amendment on the floor of the Senate

S. Amendment 2371 would have eliminated the Transportation Enhancements program. (Senator Coburn withdrew S. amendment 2370).

How did your senators vote?  Below is the roll call vote on the amendment.  There were some surprising votes.

It's important that we follow up with senate offices and let senators know we're watching.  We can thank your senators who voted against the Coburn amendment. AND tell the senators who voted for the amendment that we disagree with their vote and we're paying attention.

The League of American Bicyclists has a grassroots alert on their website asking advocates to email their senators to either thank them if they voted against the Coburn amendment, or to express concern if they voted for it.  Please feel free to use this alert and/or to link directly to it at:

http://capwiz.com/lab/issues/alert/?alertid=14041566

Please consider contacting your senators and either expressing your thanks or your concerns regarding their vote.

The message for those who voted against the amendment

Thank you for supporting Transportation Enhancements and voting against Coburn's amendment 2371.

The Enhancement Program is a main source of funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects, such as [local project]

We will let our members know you voted to protect funding for biking and walking on this important vote.

The message for those who voted for the amendment:

On behalf of [ your organization] we are concerned with your vote against Senate Amendment 2371 that would have decimated the Transportation Enhancement program.

The Enhancement Program is a main source of funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects, such as [local project].

Please reconsider your support for Transportation Enhancements.  This program is vital to providing transportation options for all Americans, and of critical importance to our members.

Thanks again for your help with the vote and with follow up!
