We are poised to begin our 23rd Schoolship season on May 3rd.  It has been a very wet April, and although we need the rain to help bring up the lake level, the crew has been challenged to get all the fit-out work done in time.  Thanks to Capt. Remy Champt, Allen Wolfe, Bob Hagerman, Jan Hale and Larry Good for the fine work getting the ship ready.

We have 87 classes signed up for spring Schoolship and we are looking forward to a great time on the water with these students.

I hope you can join us this spring, or during the summer season on one of the many programs listed below.

And thank you for your continued support of ISEA!

Tom Kelly, Executive Director

On May 19th, over 400 eighth graders from Traverse City West Middle School will be getting out in their community and providing services for local organizations. Ninth Annual Invasive Species Field Course

June 27-29, 2011

Common carp caught by local fishermanJoin Inland Seas Education Association for the Ninth Annual Invasive Species Field Course June 27-29th! The Invasive Species Field Course has been developed to teach educators about invasive species in the Great Lakes Region, and to prepare them to effectively teach their students, colleagues, and volunteers about invasive species. Emphasis will be on aquatic invasive species and the concept of "prevention through education."

Selected participants for the Invasive Species Field Course will participate free of charge, receive a daily stipend, and be provided complimentary meals and lodging in Traverse City. Three SB-CEU credits through the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District and one graduate credit from Central Michigan University are available for this program at an additional cost.

For more information on becoming a participant in the Ninth Annual Invasive Species Field Course, go to the ISEA website or contact Christine Crissman by e-mail or by phone at 231-271-3077.

This program is provided through the Grand Traverse Regional Invasive Species Network (ISN), coordinated by the Grand Traverse Conservation District. The ISN is made possible through funds from a $935,182 grant provided by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Click here to learn more.

The Quagga Mussel Quagmire

by Dr. David Jude

Quagga Mussel NOAA/GLERL

Quagga Mussel (NOAA-GLERL)

Back in 1988, zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha were discovered in the St. Clair River, which was around the time I found the first tubenose and round gobies in the same area.  This suggests a strong linkage with the foreign freighters which were probably responsible for dumping them into the river with their ballast water discharge.  Unfortunately this scourge continues.

More Volunteer Opportunities

We had a new aquarium cover made for one of the aquariums in the exhibit hall. It needs to be picked up at the manufacturer which is located just south of Grand Rapids. If you will be in the GR area and would like to bring this to Suttons Bay for us, please give Tom Kelly a call.  Thanks.

We also need to remove the winter cover from Liberty and do some preliminary work on her before launching.  She is in storage in Northport.  Two or three volunteers are needed to help with this project which should take about 3 hours.
