Happy Spring, everyone! The calendar says spring, but outside my window the ground is still mostly covered with snow, and Suttons Bay is still blocked with ice.  Things will change rapidly though, and in another week or so this white stuff will be gone and the Schoolship Inland Seas will have returned to Suttons Bay.  By May 1 the ship will be ready for another season (her 17th) of teaching science and stewardship to thousands of students and adults.

As many of you know, Kim Biocchi, our Director of Administration and Operations has been in Ann Arbor for the past month, recovering from heart surgery.  Please keep Kim in your thoughts and prayers.  If you would like to send her a card, please address it to the ISEA office, and we will pass it along at the appropriate time.  I hope to see Kim tomorrow evening, and I will pass along the best wishes of everyone involved with ISEA.

A couple of our stalwart Volunteer Instructors could also use your good thoughts...Maury Witteveen is recovering after a bad fall, and Carol Inman is home now after surgery last week.  We hope to see Maury and Carol sailing with us again soon.

And it is my sad duty to report that two former Instructors have recently crossed the bar.  To Pat Menzies and Bill Jacobs, I say thank you for all you have done for ISEA and our young students. Fair winds, Pat and Bill.

Let's look ahead now, to the coming season, to the clear horizon, and to the creamy wave

curling at the schooner's shapely bows.  There are many great works yet to be done.

New Report States Electric Barrier May Not Deter Juvenile Asian Carp

Silver carp

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers acknowledged last week that its electric fish barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal is not operating at a level high enough to repel all sizes of Asian carp. Although juvenile Asian carp have not been found closer than 116 miles downstream of the barrier, at its current capacity juveniles less than 5 inches have the potential to swim through the barrier. The barrier is not currently running at full capacity because of the threat that electricity poses to canal barge operators in the area.

The Army Corps is in the midst of a five-year study looking at ways to re-create the natural separation between the Mississippi and Lake Michigan. Click here for more information about this study.
