Volume IV, Issue 2 - February 2011

From the Pilothouse

It is the end of February and ice is covering Suttons Bay and the Lower West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay.  But spring is just around the corner, and I see I only have five weeks to get through my "to do" list  before fit-out, which begins on April 4th.  The crew will then be back to work getting the ship ready for Spring Schoolship.

And a busy Schoolship season it will be, as we currently have 87 classes signed on, with more pending.

I have just returned from the Chicago Maritime Festival where I presented a talk on Inland Seas' invasive species education programs for young people.  It was a wonderful day, and it made me look forward even more to our 4th Summer Festival with lots of music, activities for kids and adults, and good food and friends.  And the 5 K race, which they didn't have in Chicago (too much traffic and slush).

While in the Chicago area I visited a couple of potential Asian Carp hotspots, including the O'Brien Lock and the outlet of the Portage Burns Waterway.  I have posted some photos on the ISEA blog at http://schoolship.blogspot.com/ if you would like to take a look.

See you on water soon!

Upcoming Volunteer Instructor Training

Volunteers learn how to teach the weather station.

ISEA's new volunteer instructor training is well underway with a great new class of volunteers. There are only a few classes left for the weekly training:

March 2: Seamanship
March 9: Safety
March 16: Benthos
March 23: Teaching Strategies & Review

If you missed out on attending the weekly training, there are still plenty of opportunities for training before the 2011 Schoolship season begins in May.

The all day volunteer instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 6th from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Come for the whole day or simply refresh your knowledge on a few stations.

Veteran instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 13th from 1:00 - 5:00pm. This is an excellent chance to gain more background knowledge about each station and to learn what might have changed in the program since 2010.

Lead instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 20th from 1:00 - 4:00pm. We are always looking for new lead instructors, and this is your chance to see what it is all about.

The volunteer wet run will be held Friday, April 29th. There is a morning session that runs from 8:30am - 12:30pm and an afternoon session from 1:15 - 5:15pm. Come sail aboard Inland Seas and experience the Schoolship Program from the student's point of view.
Great Lakes Seminar Series: "A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach"
March 15, 2011

Loreen Niewenhuis: A 1,000 Mile Walk on the BeachISEA's Great Lakes Seminar Series continues Tuesday, March 15th at 7:00 pm at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay. The program will be presented by author Loreen Niewenhuis, who will discuss her trek of the perimeter of Lake Michigan. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase after her presentation. This seminar is free and open to the public.

In 2009, Loreen Niewenhuis walked completely around Lake Michigan. Her book A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach chronicles that journey and explores the natural and human history of Lake Michigan. Niewenhuis raises important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems on which we all depend. More information about this and other books by Loreen Niewenhuis can be found here.

For more information on this and other upcoming seminars, check out the ISEA website.

News from the Boat Shop

Students sail Optimus prams during the NYSS programFrom February through April, volunteer instructors will once again conduct a nine-week Saturday morning program to construct two Optimist Pram sailing dinghies at the Inland Seas Education Center. Eight students will construct the prams to be used by the Northport Youth Sailing School (NYSS) during July and August 2011. Each student builder will receive a scholarship to attend one of the NYSS programs. Three students who helped build the prams in 2010 have returned and are now assisting the new students as Junior Boatbuilders. Funding for this program is made possible by the Collectors Foundation of Traverse City, Michigan.
Thank you for
"Protecting the Great Lakes Through Education!"

The Education Center is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Stop in to see the Invasive Species Exhibit and watch as students build a canoe in the Boat Shop.
