From the Pilothouse
The days are getting longer now, and spring will be here before we know it. My "to do" list continues to expand
despite my best efforts to check off completed items.
We have completed several important things recently, including the year-end fundraising campaign ($49,738 given by 168 donors). If you did not get a chance to participate in the year-end campaign, it is not too late! Your gift now will help fund the spring Schoolship Program for over 80 classes. Speaking of spring Schoolship, we now have 74 classes signed up, and we expect 10 - 20 more by the time we set sail on May 1.
The 2011 summer sailing schedule is now available (see right hand column) and includes several new programs including the Tall Ship Birding Cruise and Astronomy Under Sail - Full Moon cruises. The Tall Ship Birding Cruise is co-sponsored by the Leelanau Chamber of Commerce and is part of the 1st annual Leelanau Peninsula BirdFest. We will sail to Gull Island on June 5th to see nesting Caspian terns, herring gulls, and of course, cormorants. The popular Astronomy Under Sail programs are usually held on nights with a new moon so the stars are more visible. This year we will add two sails (6/15 & 8/13) with a full moon. Nothing is more thrilling than seeing the moon rise over the water.
Inland Seas has a place for everyone to set sail and experience the science, heritage and culture of the Great Lakes. Just call and we can help you find the right learning adventure for you and your family or organization.

Making the Great Lakes Great

ISEA, in partnership with Grand Valley State University Annis Water Resources Institute, BaySail, Michigan State University Extension, and Michigan Sea Grant, have received a Great Lakes Restoration grant through the Environmental Protection Agency to provide shipboard education and outreach programs to the public in 2011 and 2012. Several of these Making the Great Lakes Great programs will be offered in various ports throughout the summer aboard the ISEA schooner Inland Seas, and are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Click here to see if a Making the Great Lakes program is being offered near you. |
ISEA's Volunteer Instructor Training Continues...
ISEA began our volunteer instructor training course in January with about 50 new volunteers! So far, we have provided an introduction to ISEA, discussed the Great Lakes and global freshwater, reviewed sample collections and the Weather Station, and learned about the Water Chemistry Station.
While our volunteer instructor training is geared toward new volunteers, veteran instructors are welcome as well! Stop by and get updates on stations you already teach or begin training for a station you have not taught before. The volunteer instructor training course takes place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm at the Water Studies Institute in Traverse City. For more information, head to the ISEA website. If you have further questions, please contact ISEA Education Director Christine Crissman by phone at (231) 271-3077 or by e-mail.
Upcoming volunteer instructor training topics:
February 2: Sediment & benthos
February 9: Plankton
February 16: Fish
February 23: Stewardship
March 2: Seamanship
March 9: Safety
March 16: Teaching strategies
March 23: Review |

Great Lakes Seminar Series: "Changes in the Great Lakes Fisheries: Testing the Theory of Natural Selection"
February 22, 2011

ISEA's Great Lakes Seminar Series continues Tuesday, February 22nd at 7:00 pm at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay. The program will be presented by Randy Claramunt, Fisheries Biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. This seminar is free and open to the public.
The Great Lakes ecosystem is constantly changing, which has a large impact on its fishery. Claramunt will describe the special adaptations and beauty of fish that live in the Grand Traverse Bay area, including Chinook salmon, lake trout, and a native cisco thought to be extinct. He will also discuss factors that influence changes in the Great Lakes, what causes the rise and fall of salmon populations, and the future of fishing in our waters.
For more information on this and other upcoming seminars, check out the ISEA website. |

Volunteers Needed for Education Center Program on February 24
Second graders from Platte River Elementary will be participating in a program at the Inland Seas Education Center on February 24th from 10:00am-1:30pm. Activities will focus on the Great Lakes and the importance of freshwater. We will be providing activity stations for the students to rotate through (similar to Schoolship Programs), and need six volunteers to help teach those stations. Please contact ISEA Education Director Christine Crissman by phone at (231) 271-3077 or e-mail if you are interested in planning the activities and/or teaching a station.
