Best wishes for a joyful Holiday season. We have been busy wrapping up post- season activities(Evaluation Report, reports to funders) and preparing for the sailing season to come. Captains Remy and Allen have been refinishing parts of the schooner, and we will be making some new running rigging this winter. We have also been working with our partners to develop our 2011 sailing schedule.
Spring commissioning of the ship will begin on April 4 and will continue for the next four weeks. This will include crew training and underway safety exercises. Spring Schoolship classes begin on May 2 and will continue through the second week in June. We currently have 79 school classes signed up for spring, and we hope for another 10 to 20 additional classes by May.
We will again be at the Northport Lighthouse and Maritime Festival on June 18 for three history sails. Our Friendship sloop Liberty will make her season debut there also. The following week we will have our first Young Women in Science research trip, sponsored by Michigan Zonta International chapters. The last week in June will include our ninth annual Invasive Species Field Course for teachers.
The next three weeks, Inland Seas will collaborate with Lake Superior State University, sailing with a Native Cultures course, Adventure Camp day sails, and an Oceanography class. During the week of August 15 Inland Seas will visit Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Bay Harbor for EPA-sponsored public programs.
Fall Schoolship begins after Labor Day. Make sure to visit and sail with us at the Michigan Schooner Festival on September 9-11.
Whew, another busy season! And there is more that we will announce as details are worked out. While you are waiting to sail again, get ready by attending the Volunteer Instructor Class and the Inland Seas Seminars.
Many thanks to all who have worked with ISEA this year. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

ISEA Announces Its 2011 Summer Sailing Schedule
A true Great Lakes sailing experience focused on a unique combination of science, stewardship and maritime history awaits you this summer aboard the schooner Inland Seas. Family Ecology Sails are the centerpiece of a summer of hands-on activities aboard our 77-foot tall ship, with sails scheduled from June 23 through August 25, 2011. These three-hour science and sailing adventures are wonderful experiences for families, with kids ages 5 and up.
ISEA also offers a variety of specialty sailing experiences for both families and adults. These programs include a four-hour Tall Ship Birding Cruise on June 5th.
On June 22nd, our Maritime History Sail will feature local historians discussing the rich maritime history of the coastal villages of Suttons Bay, Omena, and Peshawbestown as we sail on Grand Traverse Bay. You will enjoy dinner prepared by our ship's cook.
The popular Astronomy Under Sail excursions with astronomer Dick Cookman are scheduled for the evenings of June 15, June 30, and August 13, 2011. New this year are sails during a full moon! (6-15 & 8-13). This adults-only adventure affords a clear view of the night sky and the constellations that have guided ships for centuries.

Meet Ana Wodek, ISEA's Work Studies Student from Suttons Bay
Ever since I first watched the Disney movie "The Little Mermaid," I have been hooked on anything to do with aquatics. My fascination with the animals that live in it and its pure beauty has made me fall in love with all lakes and oceans. My name is Ana Wodek and I am now a senior at Suttons Bay High School. Still to this day, I'd rather be swimming in the water than walking on land. I have been very fortunate to be able to grow up in such a beautiful area that is surrounded by water. After I finish my senior year, I am planning on attending Michigan State University to study Marine Biology. One day, I hope to become a whale trainer at Sea World and move to Florida.
My passions and interests in Marine Biology have led me to Inland Seas Education Association to further my interests in different aquatic fields. I have been learning and helping out with the daily tasks that are involved inside of the Education Center. Inland Seas is not only a beautiful ship that allows students to get hands-on learning opportunities, but it is also a representation of the Inland Seas' members' love for the Great Lakes. |
