From the Pilothouse

ISEA's 22nd Schoolship season ended early this month after hosting 3,284 students aboard for educational programs. This year we did many more multiple day trips, from two to seven days in length.  We traveled the familiar waters of Grand Traverse Bay and Little Bay de Noc, and in August went to Chicago's Tall Ship Festival, with student programs on the way there and back.  We put more miles under the keel in August and early September than ever before.

In addition to the students who sailed with us, Inland Seas hosted over 4,000 people aboard for dockside programs.

More important than the numbers is the impact we have on each student.  I know we are on course when I get a letter from a student who tells me "My experience on the bay yesterday changed my life."  We also have many former students and interns who are now in college or graduate school. Hearing from them makes my day.  We hope to see them again soon, as professionals working alongside ISEA, as we "Protect the Great Lakes Through Education."  Thanks everyone, for being part of this great adventure.

Great Lakes Seminar Series:
"An Ecological History of Grand Traverse Bay"
October 26, 2010

T Kelly in PilothouseISEA's 2010-2011 Great Lakes Seminar Series begins on Tuesday, October 26th at 7:00 pm at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay. The program will be presented by Tom Kelly, Executive Director of the Inland Seas Education Association. This seminar is freeand open to the public.

The Great Lakes were formed over 10,000 years ago when the Laurentide ice sheet receded. The ecology of the Great Lakes is continually changing and its history includes both great losses and enormous recovery. Kelly will examine the ecological changes that have occurred in Grand Traverse Bay from the Pleistocene Ice Age to the present, with emphasis on the impacts of European settlement on the region's aquatic fauna and flora. He will focus on the influence of dams, lumbering, fishing, urbanization, invasive species, and climate change on the Grand Traverse Bay ecosystem.

3rd Annual Freshwater Summit

Freshwater Summit October 29, 2010The third annual Freshwater Summit will take place Friday, October 29, 2010 from 9:00am-4:15pm. The Freshwater Summit is a combination of workshops and speakers discussing issues and strategies for our Grand Traverse Bay community. This event is great for lake associations, shoreline property owners, educators, scientists, environmental advocates....anyone who lives, works, or plays in Grand Traverse Bay. This year's highlight is a keynote panel about Asian carp. Other sessions include oil and gas exploration, Chain of Lakes fisheries, Boardman River dams, the Grand Traverse Bay hydrographic survey, and watershed forestry. Click here for a detailed agenda.

The cost is $20 (which includes lunch), and pre-registering is strongly encouraged, as last year's event was sold out. For more information or to register, go to The Watershed Center website or call Denise Baker at 231-935-1514, ext. 4.
