From the Pilothouse

It has been a very busy month for the Schoolship schooner Inland Seas. After several Family Ecology Sails and two Astronomy Under Sail programs, we left for Chicago on August 12th. The next day in Leland we picked up eight high school students and two instructors from the Shedd Aquarium (see story to right). We had port visits at Frankfort, Ludington, Muskegon, Holland, St. Joseph/Benton Harbor and Hammond, Indiana before reaching our destination at Burnham Marina in Chicago.  After a few days rest, we began a very hectic but fun week at the Tall Ship Festival in Chicago.  We had to move the boat several times during the festival because of rough seas in the harbor. From Chicago, Capt. Remy and crew took the schooner to Milwaukee with stops at Waukegan and Kenosha. This trip involved five other schooners and 70 middle school students from Kentucky!

We plan to bring the boat back to Suttons Bay next week just in time for the Schooner Festival in Traverse City. See you there!

Coming up later in September is a four-day trip with Lake Superior State University. ISEA's Boat shop will be featured at the Boats on the Wall gathering in Leland on September 18th.  Fall Schoolship Programs begin on the 14th, after a Day on the Bay program in Traverse City on the 13th.  We finish the season on October 7th with Traverse Heights Elementary School.

Lots of work, lots of volunteer time, lots of fun and learning.  That's what ISEA is all about.  Thanks for helping with the 2010 season.

Great Lakes Semester Program with Shedd Aquarium a Success!

The Captain and crew of Inland Seas spent 8 days on Lake Michigan with 8 students and 2 instructors from Shedd Aquarium's Great Lakes Semester program. Inland Seas sailed from Suttons Bay to Chicago while the students collected biological samples, learned to sail the ship, and captured their experience on video and in their journals. Two students even wrote blogs during the trip, which can be found on the Shedd Aquarium website.

This trip was a great experience for everyone on board! The Great Lakes Semester continues through the end of the year, and ISEA is looking forward to following the students as they continue to explore sustainability in the Great Lakes through challenge based learning.

Inland Seas Participates in Tall Ships Chicago

Inland Seas was in Chicago for the Tall Ships event August 24-29. The event began with a Parade of Sail, where all 20 ships sailed through the harbor and came into Navy Pier to dock. During the festival, volunteers and crew spoke with the public about our programs and gave dockside tours of Inland Seas. There was music, fireworks, a green village, and lots of fun for the 1.5+ million visitors.

Thanks so much to our volunteers and crew for all their hard work during this event!!
