Volume III, Issue 5 - Spring 2010

From the Pilothouse

We are well into our 22nd spring Schoolship season with an additional 1,246 students sailing with us as of the end of this week. Our cumulative number should top 85,000 by mid-June when we switch gears and begin our summer schedule. Thanks to all the Volunteer Instructors who taught aboard Inland Seas and Manitou this spring!

In June we will sail to Gull Island on the 12th (spaces available) and then with the Archeology Field Course from Lake Superior State University on the 14th - 17th. On the 19th we will be in Northport to help celebrate the Lighthouse and Maritime Festival. The following week we will have two Zonta International-sponsored Young Women in Science research overnight programs. We will end the month in Charlevoix with our Day on the Bay program held in cooperation with the MDNRE Coastal Management Program, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and the Lake Charlevoix Association. It is a busy start to a busy season. Come sailing with us and join the learning, stewardship and fun.

Best regards,
Tom Kelly, Executive Director
From the Board President
ISEA's Schoolship program provides our students a unique opportunity to spend the day outdoors and to experience the majesty of the Great Lakes, while they learn about freshwater science and stewardship from our staff and committed volunteers.  In education, getting students interested and focused to make their best efforts in the classroom has been a challenge throughout history -- and this may be more true now than ever before, with the many distractions provided by media and technology.  Our Schoolship programs provide students with a "learning adventure" that stimulates interest in education, science and stewardship of the Great Lakes, with a "momentum" and interest in the adventure of learning that carries forward beyond their day on Grand Traverse Bay.

Our students will be tomorrow's scientists and stewards.  They will have a role in developing solutions to our many ecological problems. They will have their work cut-out for them, as the BP disaster in the Gulf amply demonstrates.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers and donors who make our programs so successful!  Please invite your friends and family to attend ISEA's  Music Festival on July 17, 2010, and help us celebrate our successes!  We will have music, food and a 5K run (or walk, for those so inclined).

Jay Zelenock, Board President

ISEA Volunteer Gloria Veltman Blogs about ISEA

Gloria VeltmanISEA volunteer Gloria Veltman is a regular blogger on the Record Eagle website. Last month, Gloria blogged about the Schoolship experience and what it has meant to her and some of the 83,00 students who have sailed with us. Go to the Record Eagle website to read her Schoolship blog. While you are there, stay and read some of the other great posts. Thanks, Gloria!
Volunteer Appreciation Picnic

Join ISEA staff for a potluck picnic to celebrate the end of another successful spring Schoolship season on June 11 from 6:00-8:00pm on the waterfront at the Inland Seas Education Center. Spend time getting to know ISEA staff and volunteers over a great summer meal. It is another way for us to say "THANKS" to all of our volunteers for helping us teach students about the science and spirit of the Great Lakes.

Please contact Christine Crissman by e-mail or phone at 231-271-3077 to let her know what you would like to bring. We hope to see you all there!
Sail to Gull Island
Saturday, June 12

Gull Island
Here is your chance to observe close-up the nesting habitat of one of our largest herring gull and double-crested cormorant colonies. We may also see Caspian terns and other water birds. Our guest faculty will consist of ornithologist Dr. Bill Scharf and historian/author Kathy Firestone, both experts on the island. Management efforts of Gull Island will be discussed by a representative of the Leelanau Conservancy, owners of the island. We will leave the dock at 10:00 am and return at 2:30 pm. Lunch will be served during the trip. Please call the ISEA office at (231) 271-3077 to register for this trip.
ISEA Welcomes Science Educator Emily Shaw

ISEA would like to welcome Emily Shaw as our Science Educator for the summer of 2010. Emily is a senior at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, majoring in Environmental Management. She will be staying aboard Inland Seas and will be leading many of our educational programs this summer. Emily has done an excellent job for her first few weeks and we are looking forward to working with her this summer!

Toxic Pollution Still Threatens the Great Lakes

A new report released by Pollution Watch states that facilities released just over 460 million tons of pollutants into the Great Lakes in 2007. Many emerging contaminants originate from consumer products and better regulation of toxic chemicals could dramatically help prevent Great Lakes pollutants. For more information on this topic, check out the Great Lakes United press release, or you can download the report from the Pollution Watch website.
